As athletic events come to a halt, we’ll spend some time looking back at Mountaineer highlights and games from past seasons.

Today’s video reviews WVU’s 1969 football season in which West Virginia finished ranked No. 17 in the country with a 10-1 record and defeated South Carolina in the Peach Bowl.

My jr year at WVU …. big time season after many lean years in the 60s. We drove to the bowl game in Atlanta and also to New Orleans for the Tulane game both times staying at a Pike House. Many great memories

Martin – 1969 was pre-Interstate through most of West Virginia (at least Morgantown), so what was the drive time to Atlanta and also to New Orleans?

We drove 20 hours one way from Morgantown to Houston for the 1984 Bluebonnet Bowl, but that was basically all Interstate. I can’t imagine that drive on two-lane roads. I’ve driven to many, many WVU athletic events in the last 40 some years, but that one to Houston remains my longest. I don’t mind driving, but that’s a personal record I’ll probably never beat.

I drove to Phoenix for the 1989 Fiesta Bowl, and also to El Paso for the 1987 Sun Bowl. Did some great sightseeing along the way on both of those trips.

Tulane trip: we were playing cards and someone said lets go to New Orleans. We loaded up 3 car loads and 19 hours later arrived on Bourbon St at 3pm on friday found Your Fathers Mustache which had all you could drink happy hour for $3. I won’t  detail anything else. I think it took us over 12 hours to Atlanta. I remember the news paper headlines on Sunday after our big victory. “Women and Children are now safe; the Mountaineers have left town.”
