Report: WVU, Purdue, Set To Meet In NYC Hoops Event Next Season
According to a tweet from college basketball reporter Jon Rothstein, West Virginia and Purdue will meet in men’s basketball on December 13, 2020, in New York City. Florida is scheduled to play Penn State in the other half of a doubleheader.
That the Boilermakers and Mountaineers have reportedly worked out such an agreement comes as no surprise. The teams have met multiple times over the past few years in the “secret scrimmage” that each Division I team is allowed prior to the start of the season.
West Virginia is 1-7 all-time against Purdue, with its lone win coming on January 16, 2011 at the WVU Coliseum. The Boliers took both ends of a home-and-home series in the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons, marking the last meetings between the two teams.
Bob Huggins is 3-3 overall against Purdue, with the other two wins coming while he was at Cincinnati.
WVU routinely plays in at least one holiday event each year that spans multiple games, and often doubles up on that with a second, one-off game as described by Rothstein. WVU is also committed to two non-conference games each year via the Big 12 – SEC Challenge and the Big 12 – Big East Scheduling Alliance.
Following are West Virginia’s recent such single games:
2019-20 Cleveland Classic Ohio State
2018-19 Basketball Hall of Fame Holiday Showcase Rhode Island
2018-19 Jimmy V Classic Florida
2017-18 Armed Forces Classic Texas A&M
2015-16 Jimmy V Classic Virginia
2014-15 Gotham Classic N.C. State
2012-13 Brooklyn Hoops Winter Festival Michigan
WVU is 2-5 in these contests, with wins over Ohio State and N.C. State.
