West Virginia Drops Opener After Texas Rally
West Virginia’s four-game winning streak came to an end in a 6-2 loss at Texas on Friday night.
The Mountaineers (31-21, 11-11 Big 12) took a 2-0 lead, but the Longhorns (33-19, 10-11 Big 12) rallied with runs in each of the final three innings to come back and win it at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. WVU’s two runs came on 10 hits, while UT’s six runs, two of them unearned on a pair of West Virginia errors, came on eight hits. Both teams stranded seven runners on base.
Junior right-handed starter BJ Myers held Texas to three hits in the opening five innings before the home team got on the board with two runs in the sixth to tie the game at 2-2. UT then scored three in the seventh. In 6.1 innings, Myers allowed five runs, four earned, on six hits with five strikeouts and three balls and fell to 4-3 on the season.
Offensively, sophomores Cole Austin, Kyle Gray and Darius Hill all had two hits. Austin and sophomore catcher Ivan Gonzalez drove in both of WVU’s runs. Junior left fielder Kyle Davis singled in the fourth inning to extend his team-leading reached-base streak to 22 games.
The Mountaineers got on the board with a run in the second inning. Hill led off the inning with a double to right-center and scored on Austin’s single up the middle. A double play helped end the inning and prevent WVU from adding to its 1-0 lead.
After Myers retired Texas in order in the bottom of the third, both teams stranded two runners on base in the fourth. West Virginia added a run in the fifth, making it 2-0. Back-to-back one-out singles put runners on the corners for Gonzalez, who singled to left to bring home freshman center fielder Brandon White.
The Longhorns got on the board in the sixth inning with two runs, one unearned, on one hit with the help of an error. A one-out throwing error was followed by a walk to put two runners on. A double to right field made it 2-1, and Texas then tied the game on a wild pitch.
WVU stranded another two runners in the top of the seventh before Texas took its first lead of the game in the bottom of the inning, 5-2. UT scored three runs on three hits, as the first three batters in the inning reached base. An RBI single scored the first run before a sacrifice fly and a single brought in the next two.
Freshman right-hander Ryan McDonald got the final two outs of the inning, relieving Myers. Texas added another unearned run in the eighth, on a sacrifice fly after a leadoff single and throwing error.
In 1.2 relief innings, McDonald allowed one unearned run on two hits with no walks. Trailing 6-2, the Mountaineers were retired in order in the ninth inning.
The series continues on Saturday, with a game that has been moved up to 2 p.m. ET/1 p.m. CT due to inclement weather expected in the Austin area. The series, and the regular season, concludes on Sunday at 2 p.m. ET/1 p.m. CT.
