WVU Cruises To 56-10 Season Opening Win Over Eastern Kentucky

West Virginia wide receiver Sam James (13) snares a touchdown pass

Morgantown, W.Va. – Despite playing without 11 players who were suspended for Saturday’s season opener, the Mountaineer football team easily dispatched Eastern Kentucky, 56-10.

With nearly 70 WVU players seeing game action, West Virginia totaled over 295 yards in both the passing and rushing categories – 329 rushing and 295 passing.

WVU scored touchdowns on six of its eight positions and never looked back, as it amassed 228 passing yards and 170 rushing in the first half alone.

Two Mountaineer running backs – Leddie Brown and Alec Sinkfield – each finished with 123 yards, and redshirt freshman Tony Mathis added 55 on the ground.

Eastern Kentucky, which fell to 0-2 on the year, had 206 yards of total offense – 131 passing and 75 rushing.

Saw a lot of rough spots but figured most of them were 1st game type things and not being able to practice like normal

EKU was bad. I am concerned by a couple things I saw today on defense. TE streaking down the middle of the field, the wheel route. As I said last year, “meet the new boss, same as the old boss”.
