WVU Football 2018  Verbal Commitment Update


All but two of WVU’s 2017 football verbal commitments are in action this weekend. Here are the updates from Friday night, with more to come from today’s action, and more quotes from the players as they review last night’s games.


Tyrese Allen     DT     6-4     295     Paintsville HS \ Paintsville, KY

Shut out Harlan 37-0.  Allen helped lead the shutout defensive effort, limiting Harlan to just 98 yards of total offense. He also flipped to the offensive side, scoring a touchdown on a one-yard plunge. He also completed an option pass for a gain of 49 yards.

Leddie Brown     RB     6-1      195     Neumann-Goretti HS \ Philadelphia, PA

Brown continues to be pursued by Florida and former WVU coach JaJuan Seider. The Saints are scheduled to open their season next weekend.

Josh Chandler     LB     6-1     220     McKinley HS \ Canton, OH

McKinley earned an excellent win to start the season as it downed Warren Harding 29-7. The battle of Top 15 programs. Chandler had 71 rushing yards and two scores, and was also a defensive standout as the Bulldogs won their first season opener in four years.

Ralph Davis III     WR     6-1     220      North Shore HS \  Houston, TX

Davis is among the latest starters among WVU commits, but at least has less than a week to go as he gets things going this Thursday night.

Randy Fields     WR     6-3     195     St. Frances HS \ Baltimore, MD

St. Frances blanked visiting Canada Prep Football Academy 41-0. Fields had an 18-yard touchdown reception in the win.

James Gmiter     DL      6-4     300    Bethel Park HS \ Bethel Park, PA

The WPIAL keeps the classic Labor Day weekend starting schedule, as Bethel Park faces North Allegheny in a WPIAL clash.

T.J. Ivy     WR\TE     6-5     225     Marist HS \ Marist, IL

The RedHawks had a successful opener, getting a 23-14 win over Brother Rice after jumping out to an early 14-0 lead on the game’s first two possessions.  The RedHawks are #10 in the Chicago Sun-Times Super 25 rankings.

Sam James     WR     6-1     170     Richmond Hill HS \ Richmond Hill, GA

James ignited the Wildcat attack with an 80- yard touchdown reception on the first play of the game and added another on an 18-yard screen pass later in the first quarter to help spark a 38-21 victory over Southeast Bulloch. He ended the game with four catches for 145 yards.

Trey Lowe     QB     6-4     200     Bolivar Central HS \ Bolivar, TN

The Tigers advanced to 2-0 on the season with a 57-37 win over the Memphis Academy of Health Sciences. Lowe was 7-11 passing for 140 yards and two scores, and added six carries for 50 yards and another TD on the ground. He also had an interception on defense.

Briason Mays     OT     6-4     290     Bolivar Central HS \ Bolivar, TN

The Tigers advanced to 2-0 on the season with a 57-37 win over the Memphis Academy of Health Sciences. Mays helped power another offensive onslaught that overwhelmed the opponent for the second consecutive week.

Mike O’Laughlin     WR\TE     6-5     215     Fenwick HS \  Oak Park, IL

 O’Laughlin, like TJ Ivy, is on the Chicago Sun-Times List of the Top 50 football players in the Chicagoland area. Fenwick won by forfeit over Bowen, so it will open the season this Friday.

Jayce Rogers     CB     5-9     175     Valdosta HS \ Valdosta, GA

A week after suffering a shutout, the Wildcats posted one of their own in a 26-0 win over Woodland. the game was shortened to just over one half due to lightning. Valdosta allowed only 48 yards of total offense in the game. Rogers sat out the game with an ankle injury, and will miss at least two more contests.

Darius Stills     DL     6-4     260     Fairmont Senior HS \ Fairmont, WV

After committing to West Virginia on Thursday afternoon, Stills helped the Polar Bears knock of Robert C. Byrd 35-14. Stills put on early pressure to help force an RCB fumble, and he had six tackles, with two behind the line of scrimmage, in a good opening to his senior campaign.

Junior Uzebu     OL     6-6     305     Alpharetta HS \ Alpharetta GA

After last week’s loss Uzebu told BlueGoldNews.com “it is only going to motivate us more. We work hard in practice, watch film and learn from our mistakes, and keep striving for the championship!” He followed through with that promise as the Raiders downed Gainesville 29-7. Alpharetta recorded almost 300 yards of total offense in the win.

Bryce Wheaton     WR     6-3     200     Holly Springs HS \  Holly Springs,NC

The Golden Hawks suffered a 45-0 loss to Lee County. Wheaton continues to recover from a shoulder injury suffered in the season opener. Prior to the game, he noted “Today is going to be rough” on Twitter – referring to missing the game.

Alex Williams     DE     6-6     250     Pickerington North HS \ Pickerington, OH

Pickerington North is the second team this week to get a win over a Canadian squad. The Panthers downed Clarkson (also known as Football North) 40-7. Williams had five tackles as PN won the debut came for its new head coach Nathan Hillerich.
