WVU Ranked In Final AP Poll For The 19th Time In School History

The final rankings for the 2019-20 men’s college basketball season were released this week, and West Virginia finished No. 24 in both the Associate Press poll and the coaches’ poll.

Kansas was No. 1 in each poll, while fellow Big 12 member Baylor was No. 4 in the coaches poll and No. 5 in the AP WVU was the only other Big 12 school in the top 25, though Texas Tech received votes in each.

Coming off last year’s 15-21 season, the Mountaineers were not ranked in the preseason edition of either poll and in fact didn’t receive any votes in either during that first version. West Virginia moved into the AP poll for the first time on Dec. 16 after a 10-1 start and rose as high as No. 12 in the last poll of January before February’s struggles (3-6) saw it fall through the rankings and eventually completely out of both polls on March 2. WVU was only out of the poll for one week, though, before re-entering the ranking on March 9, which was the last poll before this postseason version.

In its history, West Virginia’s men’s basketball team has been ranked in the preseason just six times (though the preseason version was not around until 1962) and has finished ranked 19 times in the final edition, which at times was conducted before the NCAA Tournament. WVU has spent a total of 246 weeks in the AP poll. Of those, 112 have come in the Bob Huggins era (2007-precent), and 10 of his 13 WVU squads have been ranked at least one week. The Mountaineers had a streak of 55 straight weeks in the AP poll from 2015-18, which was one week shy of the school record of 56 straight weeks amassed from March 1956-March 1960.
