Since Hurricane Florence forced an idle week on #14 West Virginia, I checked to see how the Mountaineers can be helped in the rankings anyway.
Obviously, losses or terrible games and narrow victories by teams 9 through 13 would help. I don’t expect much boost to WVU, though.
Washington losing to Utah might be our best chance.

Best matchup of the day is #7 Auburn home to #12 LSU. 3:30 p.m., CBS.

#15 TCU gets #4 Ohio State in Arlington with the bad-boy coach still not on the sidelines for the Buckeyes. This will give us an idea of how the Horny Frogs might do in the Big 12 title race. 8 p.m., ABC.

Even though Ole Miss is not ranked but 2-0, #1 Alabama coming into Oxford could be interesting. 7 p.m., ESPN.

#5 Oklahoma visits Iowa State, which ALWAYS is as dangerous as a minefield in Ames. Noon, ABC.

#24 Oklahoma State hosts #17 Boise State, so we’ll see if the Cowboys belong in the mix with Oklahoma, WVU and TCU for the Big 12 title. 3:30 p.m., ESPN.

Texas gets #22 Southern Cal (1-1) in Austin. I wonder which Texas and which USC will show up for this game. Both are bipolar. 8 p.m. Fox.

Duke visits Baylor and both teams are undefeated and unranked, and for good reason. 3:30 p.m., Fox Sports 1.

Kansas State gets winless Texas-San Antonio as a tuneup for WVU in Morgantown next week. 4 p.m., no TV coverage listed.

Texas Tech hosts unbeaten Houston. Might be too dangerous an opponent for TT. 4:15 p.m., Fox.

Kansas hosts Rutgers in a battle of ne’er do wells. Noon, no TV listed (of course).

#2 Clemson has a home payday game against Georgia Southern, which will no longer be undefeated. 3:30 p.m., ESPN2.

    #3 Georgia hosts a payday game with Middle Tennessee. 7:15 p.m., ESPN2.

#6 Wisconsin should beware of visiting BYU, despite its 1-1 record. 3:30 p.m., ABC.

#8 Notre Dame plays an unbeaten (!) Vanderbilt in the shadow of Touchdown Jesus. 2:30 p.m., NBC.

    #9 Stanford has a payday home game against California-Davis. 2 p.m., Pac-12 TV network.

#10 Washington meets unbeaten Utah in Salt Lake City. Utes could help idle WVU’s rankings. 10 p.m., ESPN.

#11 Penn State is home to payday opponent Kent State. Noon, Fox Sports 1.

#16 Mississippi State is host to the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns. 7:30 p.m., SEC Network.

#19 Michigan takes on winless SMU in Ann Arbor, so Harbaugh should look like a brilliant coach again. 3:30 p.m., Big Ten Network.

#20 Oregon has a payday game in Eugene against winless San Jose State. 5 p.m., Pac-15 Network.

#21 Miami visits (!) Toledo. Why come to Toledo, I don’t have a clue. ESPN2, noon.

#23 Arizona State can’t take even a 1-1 San Diego State lightly because it’s in San Diego. 10:30 p.m., CBS Sports Network.

Canceled: #13 Virginia Tech vs. East Carolina, #14 WVU vs. NC State, #18 UCF vs. winless North Carolina.

In my opinion, barring some major upsets, WVU could move up two spots with a Utah win over No. 10 Washington and a win by No. 7 Auburn over No. 12 LSU. Not sure Auburn fall past No. 14 WVU if it loses unless it is a blowout. No. 13 Virginia Tech also has had its game cancelled, so that order should stay and everyone else rated above WVU is a double-digit favorite, so it would take an upset for any of them to lose, but if any do, they should definitely fall below WVU.

I would say TCU has the best shot at moving up and probably to top 10 with a win over Ohio State.

I tend to agree with Greg and Allen.

WVU shouldn’t go down because a school below them wins big.
