After helping the Mountaineers upset No. 10/8 Mississippi State in the Big 12/SEC Challenge on Sunday, freshman guard Kirsten Deans of the West Virginia University women’s basketball team has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week.
Deans led West Virginia in scoring against Mississippi State, with a career-high 17 points, and sank the game-winning, 3-point shot with 1:45 remaining in the game. The Greensboro, North Carolina, native finished 4-of-8 from the field (50.0%) and shot 3-of-4 (75.0%) from behind the arc. Deans also was perfect from the free-throw line against the Bulldogs, shooting 6-of-6, and made four free throws in the final 15 seconds to ice the game and secure the upset for WVU. She also posted four rebounds and set five new career highs in the upset win.
Through seven games this season, Deans is averaging 8.6 points per game and leads the team in 3-point field goal percentage (8-of-15, 53.3%). She is also averaging 3.6 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 0.6 steals early in the season for the Mountaineers.
