This is, of course, a tragedy. But at least the school’s president has not tried to hide behind carefully worded statements, PR blather, blame-throwing or any of the other tactics so common today. Again, the whole incident is terrible. But Maryland president Wallace Loh deserves credit for not worrying about deflecting blame or trying to limit culpability. He said and did the right things today. It’s awful that he had to do so, but this sets the standard in how an entity should respond when something bad happens.
