This was one game that I thought WVU had little chance to win. Not because it was Kentucky, per se, but because WVU was just so much smaller across the lineup. And then to win after not making a two-point FG in the first half – that was a special and fun day.

This was also in the days when the NCAA didn’t provide internet connectivity, and wanted to charge like $300-400 for three days of access. I had my own access device that ran off my cell service, but the IT police at the Carrier Dome had never neard of such a thing. They insisted I was poaching their internet connectivity without paying. I had to go through my system, show them my MAC and IP addresses, then told them to show me how that was on their system. It took a good bit of that before they finally gave up.

Mazzula simply played a masterful game that night. He was always tough as nails and a strong defender. But his scoring was the nail in the coffin for the Wildcats that night.

Our matchups vs UK are always smaller. On paper Kentucky should run away with every game. But somehow Huggs keeps it interesting and pulls out a W at times. No doubt about it. Huggs is a much better game day coach than Cal. Most anybody can win with the players UK gets. Hell, UK players would even make me look like a good coach. Not too many can win with consistency with the types of players Huggs gets.
