After leading the West Virginia University golf team at the Ka’anapali Collegiate Classic in November, freshman Matthew Sharpstene has been named the Big 12 Golfer of the Month.

It marks the first time in program history as Mountaineer golfer has been honored by the Big 12, as the program resumed varsity competition in the fall of 2015 following a three-decade absence.

Sharpstene shot a career-best 210 for the second top-20 finish of his career as he tied for 18th overall. After carding a career-low 67 in the first round, he finished even par in the third round for a score of 67-72-71 at three-under par.

“Matthew has been a great addition to our team,” WVU coach Sean Covich said. “He’s coachable, he’s confident and he brings a lot of positive energy to our program. Receiving this award shows just how talented he is.”

The Charlotte, North Carolina, native tied with a pair of top-100 golfers and finished ahead of two top-100 golfers, including No. 8 John Murdock of Wyoming. Additionally, he had the fourth-most birdies in the tournament with 14 and played 14 holes under par.

The Mountaineers will resume play in February, when they head to Orlando, Florida, to take on Penn State in head-to-head action on Feb. 4.

Golf in Hawaii in November. What could be better than that? Orlando in February is a close second……

Get our crack PR team out there promoting this and we would be able to attract some pretty good HS golfers from around the country.
