Just think where we were before Mazey. This statement from the article tells us all we need to know about how the program has progressed.
“The pick of WVU shouldn’t be construed as a sign of any disrespect for the Mountaineers — instead, it’s just a mark of the strength of the Big 12 Conference. D1Baseball.com had a slightly different preseason view. It ranked Texas Tech as the #3 team in the nation an TCU at #7, followed by Texas at #21 and WVU at #22.”
#22. If you didn’t get it the first time …. #22
No argument that Randy Mazey has done an excellent job at WVU, but he’s been given resources, specifically the new stadium but not just ending there, that no other WVU baseball coach has ever had. Sort of like Coach Nehlen with the new football stadium. Both had resources needed to win, and then they took those resources and built a complete program around them.
Mazey’s success started before the new stadium was built. Immediately he took WVU to 3rd in the B12. B12 compared to VanZant’s accomplishments in the much watered down Big East. Let’s not diminish the immediate impact of Randy and his ongoing success. Much, Much better than his predecessors even with the new resources.
Think those two factors went together hand in hand. Mazey did a lot with the players he inherited. But I don’t think progress would have been sustainable without the new facilities.
In no way does that diminish what Mazey has done. There was a buzz when he got here, and that helped carry the team as it looked forward to their new home. But I don’t think he would have been here had he not been promised the new stadium either.
Question for this year: How much will they miss assistant coach Derek Matlock? Great recruiter, and his pitching teaching and approach were great. Dave Serrano is an excellent hire with a ton of experience, so it will be interesting to see how he fits in with chemistry, etc.
