    After leading the Mountaineers at the plate last weekend, sophomore center fielder Brandon White of the West Virginia University baseball team has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University Apartments.

    White, a Winter Springs, Florida, native, led the Mountaineers with five hits, a .455 batting average and two RBIs in WVU’s three-game series against Baylor last week. He also added two walks and posted a .538 on-base percentage.

    White had a hit in all three games of the series, with a team-best two on Thursday and again on Friday.

    This Week in Baseball: West Virginia opens postseason play at the Big 12 Championship against Oklahoma State on Wednesday, May 23, at 5 p.m. ET/4 p.m. CT … the Mountaineers are seeded No. 7, while the Cowboys earned the No. 2 seed … the winner of the WVU-OSU game will play the winner between No. 3 Texas Tech and No. 6 TCU on Thursday, May 24, at 8:30 p.m. ET … in the double-elimination tournament, the losers of the two games on Wednesday will face off on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. ET … on the other side of the bracket on Wednesday, top-seeded Texas will face No. 8 Kansas at 1:30 p.m. ET, and No. 4 Oklahoma opens against No. 5 Baylor at 10 a.m. ET … the annual event will once again be held at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark from May 23-27 … every game will be broadcast on FOX College Sports, with the exception of Sunday’s championship game, which will be televised on FOX Sports Networks … all games also will be available on FOX Sports GO to subscribers.

    Last Week in Baseball: West Virginia concluded the regular season with a series loss at home to Baylor … a seventh-inning sacrifice fly and stellar pitching from six West Virginia pitchers led the Mountaineers to a 2-1 victory over Baylor in the series opener on May 17 … WVU held BU to just one run on eight hits, while the Mountaineers scored a run in the third and the go-ahead run in the seventh … Zach Reid earned his first win of his WVU career, while Braden Zarbnisky picked up his first save of the year and seventh of his career … Baylor evened the series the next day with a 4-1 win … for the second consecutive day, West Virginia trailed 1-0 early, but rallied to tie the game in the fourth … however, the Bears answered with two in the fifth and another in the eighth … in the regular-season finale, West Virginia lost, 6-2, as the Mountaineers were held to two runs on seven hits … senior BJ Myers started both Thursday and Saturday’s games, pitching 3.0 innings in each contest.

    Notes: West Virginia concluded the regular season with a 27-25 record and an 8-15 mark in Big 12 play … WVU was 18-10 in non-conference play, 15-8 at home, 10-15 on the road and 2-2 at a neutral site … the Mountaineers earned a Big 12 Championship berth in each of its six seasons in the league … WVU advanced to the Big 12 Championship semifinals the last two seasons, with a championship game appearance in 2016 … before Saturday’s regular-season finale, the Mountaineers honored graduating seniors BJ Myers and Shane Ennis.

    This Week in Track and Field: Five Mountaineers – redshirt seniors Amy Cashin and Jillian Forsey, senior Sara Finfrock, redshirt junior Madelin Gardner and redshirt sophomore Olivia Hill – are set to compete in the 2018 NCAA East Preliminary Regional, from May 24-26, in Tampa, Florida.

    Last Week in Track and Field: West Virginia was off … the team last competed at the 2018 Big 12 Outdoor Championship, from May 11-13, in Waco, Texas.

    Notes: Cashin is set to compete in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, where she ranks No. 12 nationally … the qualification marks the fourth of her collegiate career … Gardner, who ranks No. 6 nationally in the pole vault, is set to make her second-straight appearance at the East Prelims … Forsey (10,000 meters) last competed at the East Prelims in 2016 and will make her second career appearance at the meet … Finfrock and Hill will make their regional debut in the pole vault and 10,000-meter run, respectively … redshirt senior Maggie Drazba (10,000 meters) and junior Danique Bryan (triple jump, long jump) also initially qualified for the East Prelims but will not compete due to injury … last year, six Mountaineers qualified for the East Prelims; Cashin (3,000-meter steeplechase) and Shamoya McNeil (triple jump) earned berths to the NCAA Outdoor Championships … the top-48 athletes in each event qualify for spots in the regional meet … qualifiers out of the East and West Regions who place in the top eight in their events automatically advance to the NCAA Championships, from June 6-9, in Eugene, Oregon.
