In spite of the rain, sophomore Matthew Sharpstene posted the lowest round of the tournament to lead the West Virginia University golf team to a third-place finish at the 43rd Annual Rutherford Intercollegiate on Sunday at the Penn State Blue Golf Course in State College, Pennsylvania.

Sharpstene fired a 66 for five-under-par in the third and final round, jumping 17 spots in the standings. He finished two under with a 54-hole total of 73-72-66=211, tying for fourth place in his fourth top-10 finish of the season.

“The scoring conditions were not easy today, but our guys stepped up,” coach Sean Covich said. “Sharp (Matthew Sharpstene) and Pap (Etienne Papineau) carried us today. Their rounds were very impressive.”

The Mountaineers carded the lowest team round of the day with a 283 for one-under par. They finished at 10 over with a three-round total of 290-289-283=862 for third place. Eastern Michigan claimed the team title at three-over par (862), while host Penn State was the runner-up at five-over par (857).

Junior Etienne Papineau shot a two-under-par 69 in the third round, moving into the top 10 to finish tied for ninth. He finished even par with a three-round total of 73-71-69=213.

Junior Philipp Matlari and sophomore Logan Perkins each finished six-over par with a 219. Perkins shot 74-72-73 across the tournament, while Matlari finished at 70-74-75 as the two tied for 23rd place.

Senior Max Sear shot 74-74-78=226 to finish in 52nd place at 13 over par. Playing as an individual, freshman Kurtis Grant finished tied for 42nd at 11 over, shooting 77-71-76=224.
