    This Week in Women’s Soccer: West Virginia (10-7-2, 5-3-1 Big 12) earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament and will play at Georgetown on Saturday, Nov. 16 at noon.

    Last Week in Women’s Soccer: WVU was off last week.

    Notes: West Virginiamader its 20th consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament, which is the fifth-longest streak in the country … the Mountaineers earned the 350th win in program history with a 2-1 victory over TCU …  the win also gave WVU its 10th victory of the 2019 campaign, marking the 20th consecutive year that the team has reached double-digit wins in a season … sophomore forward Alina Stahl leads the Mountaineers with 12 points this season and is tied for the team lead with five goals.

     

    This Week in Men’s Soccer: The Mountaineers (6-8-2, 0-4-1 MAC) begin postseason play by traveling to SIU Edwardsville for the Mid-American Conference Championship Quarterfinals on Tuesday, Nov. 12, at Ralph Korte Stadium in Edwardsville, Illinois … kickoff is set for 8 p.m. ET … the winner of Tuesday’s contest advances to take on Western Michigan in the MAC Championship Semifinal on Friday, Nov. 15, at FirstEnergy Stadium in Akron, Ohio.

    Last Week in Men’s Soccer: WVU capped the 2019 regular season with a 1-0 loss to Akron on Nov. 7, at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium … despite the loss, the Mountaineers held a 12-5 advantage in shots, including 4-1 in shots on goal … the Zips secured a 7-2 edge in corner kicks … Akron scored the match’s lone goal in the 72nd minute … sophomore forward Tony Pineda led West Virginia with two shots on goal in the setback.

    Notes: WVU and SIUE will meet for the second time in 10 days on Tuesday night … the two teams played to a 0-0 (2OT) draw on Nov. 2, in Edwardsville … WVU leads the all-time series over the Cougars, 2-0-1 … the Mountaineers enter the 2019 MAC Championship as the No. 6 seed, while SIUE earned the No. 3 seed … Tuesday also marks the first time WVU and SIUE will meet in postseason play … senior midfielder Andres Muriel Albino and freshman forward Rodrigo Robles Grajera led WVU with six goals on the year, tied for No. 4 in the MAC … senior defender Albert Andres-Llop and freshman midfielder Luke McCormick share the team lead in assists with five, which is tied for No. 5 in the conference … West Virginia ranks No. 16 nationally in corner kicks per game, averaging 6.3 per contest.

     

    This Week in Women’s Basketball: West Virginia travels to Beckley, West Virginia, on Sunday to play host to Radford at the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center … it marks the program’s first-ever trip to Beckley … the Mountaineers hold a 2-0 series lead against the Highlanders … the two last met Dec. 16, 2017, at the Charleston Civic Center with WVU taking a 75-55 win.

    Last Week in Women’s Basketball: The Mountaineers opened the 2019-20 season by going 2-0 at home … on Thursday, WVU kicked things off with a 74-45 win over Saint Francis at the WVU Coliseum … redshirt junior guard Kysre Gondrezick’s 24 points led the way … sophomore forward Kari Niblack had 10 points and seven rebounds, while freshman forward Esmery Martinez had a team-best eight rebounds … the Mountaineers made it two in a row with a 56-40 triumph of Presbyterian on Sunday … Gondrezick had another 20-point performance, followed by nine points from sophomore guard Madisen Smith … Martinez led the effort on the glass with 11 boards.

    Notes: Redshirt junior guard Kysre Gondrezick’s 22.0 points per game led the Big 12 this week … her 24 points against Saint Francis was a WVU career high … the Mountaineers’ 26 forced turnovers against the Blue Hose were the most since they had 27 against Ohio State on March 20, 2016 … with the wins, coach Mike Carey now sits at 395 wins at West Virginia and is five away from 400 … five players made their Gold and Blue debut last week, including true freshmen Esmery Martinez and Kirsten Deans … redshirt freshman forward Rochelle Norris saw her first action after sitting out last year with a knee injury … junior college transfers Blessing Ejiofor and Arleighshya McElroy also debuted against Saint Francis … WVU’s win over the Red Flash marked the team’s sixth straight season-opening win and put Carey at 16-3 all-time in season-openers.

     

    This Week in Volleyball: West Virginia (11-13, 2-9) will host Luau Night on Wednesday, Nov. 13, at 6 p.m., against Big 12 foe TCU (8-13, 3-8) inside the WVU Coliseum … Mountaineer fans are encouraged to wear Hawaiian-themed gear, as the first 250 fans in attendance will receive a free lei … it also is Dollar Night, and all tickets and select concessions will be available for $1 each … additionally, Mountaineer Maniac students in attendance will receive free food and a giveaway item … WVU’s annual Pink match will take place on Saturday, Nov. 16, at 1 p.m., against Texas Tech (14-11, 4-7) … the team will don pink jerseys in support of breast cancer awareness … WVU Medicine will sponsor the match and will collect donations for the WVU Cancer Institute … fans are encouraged to wear pink and can get the WVU sports official “pink” t-shirt with a donation of $10 or more to WVU Medicine … Mountaineer Kids Club members also can pick up their t-shirts during the afternoon matchup … additionally, the Mountaineers will sign autographs following the match … fans can purchase tickets by visiting WVUGAME.com, calling 1-800-WVUGAME or at the Mountaineer Ticket Office, located at the Gold Gate of the WVU Coliseum … all tickets are general admission.

    Last Week in Volleyball: West Virginia suffered a 3-0 loss to Iowa State on Nov. 6, at the Hilton Coliseum, in Ames, Iowa … the Cyclones took the match from the Mountaineers in set scores of 25-22, 25-23 and 25-15 … sophomore middle blocker/outside hitter Kristina Jordan had a team-best eight kills for WVU, followed by senior outside hitter Katelyn Evans with seven … defensively, senior right-side hitter Erin Slinde and redshirt junior middle blocker Audrey Adams each registered a trio of blocks in the loss … WVU finished the match hitting .140 with 27 kills and four team blocks.

    Notes: Through 24 matches, WVU is hitting .203 and averaging 12.6 kills per set … junior middle blocker Briana Lynch owns a team-high hitting percentage of .313 to rank seventh in the Big 12, while Evans leads WVU with 3.22 kills per set to rank sixth … Evans has recorded double-digit kills in 11 of the last 12 matches and is on pace to eclipse her 1,000th career kill in her final season as a Mountaineer … the Palmdale, California, native boasts 935 kills thus far and is just 65 short of the career milestone … additionally, sophomore setter Lacey Zerwas quarterbacks the Mountaineer offense, ranking fifth in the Big 12 with 10.02 assists per set … junior defensive specialist Alexa Hasting anchors WVU’s floor defense, averaging 4.08 digs per set to rank second in the league … the Plain City, Ohio, native eclipsed her 1,000th career dig at Baylor on Oct. 26.

     

    This Week in Cross Country: The Mountaineers are set to compete in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional on Friday, Nov. 15 in Bethlehem, Pa. … the women’s 6k championship race is tabbed for 11 a.m. ET on Lehigh University’s Goodman Campus Cross Country Course.

    Last Week in Cross Country: WVU did not compete last week.

    Notes: Friday’s trip to Lehigh marks the Mountaineers’ second trip to Bethlehem this season … WVU opened the 2019 season at the Lehigh Invitational on Aug. 30 … led by redshirt senior Olivia Hill in second (21:57.36) and redshirt sophomore Marianne Abdalah in fourth (22:18.23), the Mountaineers placed third with 68 team points … Friday’s race will be WVU’s sixth visit to the Goodman course since 2009 after previously competing in the Lehigh Invitational and Paul Short Run … at the 2018 Mid-Atlantic Regional, the Mountaineers placed sixth with 217 team points at Penn State’s Blue-White course in University Park, Pennsylvania … then-freshman Charlotte Wood led the way in 33rd place, crossing the finish line in 21:54.

     

    This Week in Rifle: The No. 2-ranked Mountaineers (4-0, 3-0 GARC) return to action this weekend with a pair of matches against Great America Rifle Conference (GARC) opponents … WVU opens the weekend against No. 5 Akron (4-1, 0-0) on Saturday, Nov. 16, and will line up against No. 7 NC State (3-1, 0-0) on Sunday, Nov. 17 … admission to both matches, which are scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. inside the WVU Rifle Range, is free and open to the public.

    Notes: The Mountaineers enter the weekend boasting a 4711.25 season average, including averages of 2337.5 smallbore and 2373.75 air rifle … senior Milica Babic paces WVU with a 597.25 air rifle season average, while classmate Morgan Phillips boasts a team-best 588.5 smallbore average.

     

    This Week in Swimming and Diving: WVU is off this week … the Mountaineers next compete from Nov. 21-23, when they host the first-ever WVU Invitational at the Aquatic Center at Mylan Park.

    Last Week in Swimming and Diving: WVU did not compete last week.

    Notes: The Mountaineers last competed in the West Virginia State Games from Nov. 1-2, at the Aquatic Center at Mylan Park in Morgantown … the annual meet featuring swimming and diving programs from across the state acted as the inaugural competition in the team’s new home at Mylan Park … WVU cruised to an easy victory in the two-day meet, tallying a total of 3,238.5 team points … the women’s team contributed 1,402 points to top second-place Marshall (1,036) … the men collected 1,836.5 team points, while Fairmont State was second with 328.5 points … twenty-one different Mountaineer swimmers tallied victories over the course of the two-day meet.

     

    This Week in Rowing: The Mountaineers concluded their fall season.

    Last Week in Rowing: West Virginia concluded its fall season on Nov. 8, as the novice squad traveled to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, for a scrimmage against Duquesne and Robert Morris … the Mountaineers boated two 8s and one 4-boat and competed in four, five-minute pieces up and down the Allegheny River … Friday marked the seventh consecutive season WVU has competed against Duquesne and its third straight year with RMU.

    Notes: The 2019-20 season marks the 21st season of competition for the Mountaineer rowing program … WVU coach Jimmy King enters his 12th season at the helm of the Mountaineers … this year’s squad is comprised of 62 student-athletes, including 29 returners and 33 newcomers … West Virginia added 29 members to its novice squad on Sept. 12 … Saturday’s regatta marked the first intercollegiate competition for 29 student-athletes, who were named to the novice squad on Sept. 12 … this season marks the 12th time WVU has competed at the Head of the Occoquan … in two races this fall, West Virginia has raced its way to 12 top-five finishes, eight top-three finishes and four within the top two, including one first-place finish.

     

    This Week in Wrestling: West Virginia competes in its first dual match of the season on Nov. 16, as it takes on Big 12-foe Northern Colorado in Greeley, Colorado … the Bank of Colorado Arena will host the bout, which is set to begin at 7 p.m. ET.

    Last Week in Wrestling: Redshirt sophomore Noah Adams captured his second straight tournament championship as the West Virginia University wrestling team continued its 2019-20 campaign at the Mountaineer Invitational in Boone, North Carolina, on Saturday, Nov. 9 … Adams used two pins, a tech. fall and a major decision to capture the 197-pound title … in addition to the tournament title by Adams, six Mountaineers earned top-five finishes on the day: redshirt junior Seth Hogue, redshirt freshman Alex Hornfeck, freshman Scott Joll, senior Brandon Ngati, sophomore Caleb Rea and redshirt sophomore Joey Thomas … wrestling at 141, sophomore Caleb Rea earned his second podium finish of the year with a third-place finish.

    Notes: Adams leads the Mountaineers with an 8-0 record through the first two tournaments … Rea is second at 8-1, and freshman Scott Joll ranks third with a 7-2 clip … Saturday’s match marks the second consecutive season the Mountaineers and Bears have faced each other in the dual-match opener, as WVU topped UNC, 22-14, in Morgantown last season.
