Best Virginia Finalizes Roster, Coaching Staff For 2022 TBT

Best Virginia has finalized its roster for the 2022 edition of The Basketball Tournament with the addition of three players and an assistant coach. TBT begins play on July 16 with a prize of $1 million for the winning team. Best Virginia will play in the West Virginia Regional at the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center, which gets underway on July 24.

Best Virginia rounded out its 10-man roster on Tuesday evening, adding former Mountaineers Jermaine Haley and D’Angelo Hunter, along with Ohio State alumnus Kaleb Wesson, to its roster. That gives the team a 10-man group upon which to call.

Best Virginia 2022 Roster

2 Devin Ebanks 6-9
41 John Flowers 6-8
10 Jermaine Haley 6-7
1 D’Angelo Hunter 6-7
21 Kevin Jones 6-8
15 Tanner McGrew 6-8
4 Jamel Morris 6-4
5 Jaysean Paige 6-2
3 Juwan Staten 6-1
34 Kaleb Wesson 6-10

A bit height-challenged last year, and facing a last-minute roster shuffle, the 2022 version of the roster has a much better selection of players with size and rebounding ability upon which to call. Best Virginia will be a bit thin at guard, with Morris, Paige and Staten called upon to handle the ball on the perimeter, but the swing abilities of Morris and Haley will help fill that gap.

Best Virginia will also see another familiar face on the bench, as Jevon Carter will join head coach James Long and assistant Dave Tallman as an assistant coach.

Teams joining Best Virginia in the West Virginia regional of the TBT include:
Virginia Dream
Herd That (Marshall Alumni)
Founding Fathers (James Madison Alumni)
Bucketneers (East Tennessee State Alumni)
War Ready (Auburn Alumni)
Woco Showtime (Wofford Alumni)
Fully Loaded

Best Virginia defeated Woco Showtime 70-67 in the opening round of the 2021 TBT. Bracket pairings will be announced on Wednesday.

Extremely light at G. Only 3.

Haley, Ebanks and Hunter are all swing guys who can drive it. Understand the optics, but think there’s enough there barring injury

It’s not just being able to drive it.  Can they stop the opposing smaller, quicker 2G’s?

Fair point. Unless the opponent is running a three or four guard offense, and all of them are scoring threats, I don’t think that matchup is one that can hurt BV, as it will offset with better work on the boards.

Virginia Dream lists five guards, but only William Bunton is what I would consider as being an elite scorer – although admittedly my research/knowledge is limited there. Herd That will be guard-centric, but is only listing eight players on the roster as of now, and only three 6-6 or taller.  Matchup of styles.

BV has to do better with lineup management, I think. They didn’t use Holton last year, and that hurt them IMO.

IIRC last year the teams that went deep had multiple scoring G’s on the floor most of the time with a dominate big or 2.  Hard to keep up scoring when they are moving the ball quickly with fast G’s and draining 3’s.  We have to shoot 60% from 2 to match their 40% from 3.  I just don’t see the fire power from deep on BV.

Let’s see how this pans out.

This team lost last year because it didn’t have enough outside shooting and a lack of perimeter defense.

I don’t see that weakness addressed

Also, the roster drama with one particular player definitely messed with the team dynamics/chemistry.

    Almost forgot about that

    Per BGDeuce ….

    Not enough outside shooting.

    Lack of perimeter D.

    Ummmm ….. Isn’t that what a 2G does?
