Big 12 Football Helmets

This was intended to be an open date for all 10 league teams, but the ever-shifting nature of schedules this year has put one Big 12 team in action. Two were scheduled this week, but Baylor’s game was cut one day before being played. Get used to it, as there are likely more changes, cancellations and additions to come.

The Big 12 took a beating from the Sun Belt Conference last week, losing three games to become the subject of much derision across the country. The Sun Belt teams (Coastal Carolina, Arkansas State and Louisiana) deserve all the credit in the world for the wins, while Kansas, Kansas State and Iowa State have to answer questions about their play.

However, to take those results and say that proves the eventual Big 12 champion is undeserving of postseason accolades or CFP consideration is silly, even though it is reflective of the lack of cogent thinking and analysis prevalent in sports these days. If a team in the league goes undefeated, it’s going to be in the mix.

TCU and Baylor will be the final Big 12 teams to play in 2020. Baylor scheduled a last-moment game against Houston for this week, but was then felled by COVID-19 testing and contact tracing.

Texas senior QB Sam Ehlinger was named Walter Camp Football Foundation National Offensive Player of the Week for his play on Sept. 12. He completed 25 of 33 passes for 428 yards and five touchdowns as Texas rolled to a 59-3 season opening victory over UTEP. All five of Ehlinger’s touchdown passes came in the first half.

Meanwhile, redshirt freshman Spencer Rattler set Oklahoma freshman records for passing efficiency rating (303.3), yards per completion (23.71) and yards per attempt (17.06). His passing efficiency rating is also a Big 12 record for a freshman, and the third-highest passer rating overall in OU history.

Which performance was better?

It’s too early to look at stats, but this one jumps out. Iowa State’s D.J. Miller is sixth in the league in punt return average.  His number? Minus four yards per return. On two attempts, he’s lost a total of eight yards.

THE PICK

Tulsa (0-0) at Oklahoma State (0-0)
Sat Sept 19     12:00 PM     ESPN

Cowboy head coach Mike Gundy says his team is COVID-free. Tulsa is in recovery mode, having had to get this game pushed back seven days due to a limited number of prior practices due to player unavailability, whether from actual positive tests or contact tracing. That’s a small advantage, but the Cowboys’ superior talent, coupled with their eagerness to get their season underway, adds to their advantage. OSU is the selection.

Question for anyone who might know the answer.  NB announced 2 WVU WO’s had tested positive for covid.  Some WO’s reported at the beginning of camp some at a later time.  But, WO or not, one has to think the WO’s practice with the team, interact with the team.  So, while their immediate unavailability may not be significant their contact with the team would be.  In fact Sean Martin was held out vs EKU because of contact with them.  That implies that the 2 were likely late additions to fall camp, otherwise perhaps others would have been held out as well.

When players first reported to practice I thought they all went thru a period of testing and limited contact so that any positives could be isolated until recovered.  Was that same procedure followed by the late arrival WO’s?  And perhaps it was early arrival WO’s who were the positive testers.  Either way could have impact on the roster going forward if only minimal impact against EKU.

The walk-ons that began practice at the start of the fall semester began testing at that time. They didn’t interact with the team up until that point, to my knowledge.

But they, just like everyone else on the team, could have had contact elsewhere.
