Big 12 Football Notes and Picks: Week Eleven

Four league teams (Iowa State, Baylor, Texas Tech and Oklahoma State) are just one win short of bowl eligibility, while another (TCU) needs two wins to play an extra game. Oklahoma, West Virginia and Texas are already assured of a postseason spot. Kansas and Kansas State need miracles to advance to the postseason.

A pair of freshmen are tied for the league lead in interceptions. Texas Tech’s Adrian Frye and Texas’ Cade Sterns each have four picks on the year. Frye has a bit of a bragging rights advantage as he returned one of his thefts for a touchdown.

West Virginia’s win at Texas gave the Mountaineers multiple road wins over AP ranked opponents for the first time since 2007. WVU knocked off Texas Tech earlier this year while the Red Raiders were ranked.

Texas Tech sophomore kicker Clayton Hatfield has missed just one attempt all season. He’s a perfect 48-48 on extra points and 12-13 (92.3%) on field goal tries.

Could there be a more classic trap game? The Horned Frogs are struggling on offense, but still have plenty of defensive chops, and they’ve limited good Mountaineer offenses in the past. West Virginia is riding high after a thrilling win at Texas, with championship dreams floating on the horizon. WVU is the nod to get the win at home, but look for a competitive effort from TCU.

Kansas at Kansas State

The Sunflower Showdown would be quite entertaining if this was the roundball matchup, but this football version features the worst K-State team in recent memory against a KU squad with a lame duck coach. It will be strictly a motivational, want-to contest, and that’s a difficult thing to assess. Kansas gets the nod, well, just because — and Pooka Williams.

Baylor at Iowa State

Can Baylor make it two surprises in a row? Consistency hasn’t been the Bears’ strong point, although they have put themselves in position to compete for a bowl bid much sooner than might have been thought. Iowa State has won four in a row – the longest current streak in the league – and will add one more to it this weekend.

Oklahoma State at Oklahoma
Sat Nov 10      3:30 PM      ABC

Bedlam might be a bit more like a mild ruckus this weekend, what with the Cowboys’ up and down season. Still, it’s a rivalry game, and OSU, like Texas and Texas Tech, has enough offense to make the Sooners sweat. It’s been a crazy season, so what the heck. OSU is the upset pick on the road.

Texas at Texas Tech

How will the Longhorns respond after two narrow losses? The Red Raiders are capable of putting up as many points as Oklahoma State and West Virginia did against UT, but some of that depended on the health of quarterback Alan Bowman, who was hospitalized again this week with the reoccurrence of a collapsed lung. The Big 12 passing leader is back with the team, but won’t play. That’s enough of an advantage to allow the Longhorns to get off their mini-skid.
