Big 12 Football Notes and Picks: Week Twelve

Four teams had the chance to cement bowl eligibility last week, but only Iowa State did so, joining Oklahoma, West Virginia and Texas. Baylor, Texas Tech and Oklahoma State get another shot at it this week, while TCU and Kansas State are now in do-or-die situations, needing wins in their final two games to lock up a postseason trip.

The same number of teams is still in contention for the Big 12 Championship, and all four have a head-to-head match-up either this week or next. Texas and Iowa State, both 5-2 in the league, lock up in Austin on Saturday night in a potential elimination battle, while West Virginia and Oklahoma meet on Nov. 23.

Oklahoma has three of the Big 12’s top seven rushers. Sophomore Trey Sermon (84.6 ypg), freshman Kennedy Brooks (80) and junior Kyler Murray (64) stand fifth through seventh on the league’s rushing chart.

West Virginia linebacker David Long is the only player at his position among the top eight in sacks in the league. His eight sacks (.89 per game) put him second in the standings, amongst a host of defensive linemen.

Iowa State has allowed only 12 touchdowns on 28 opponent red zone trips. That TD rate of 42.8% is by far the best number in the Big 12.

THE PICKS

TCU at Baylor

Both teams are playing to stay in the bowl hunt. Might Baylor’s motivation be a bit stronger? The Bears’ are having a better season than expected, and getting that postseason game would be a nice step in their rebuild. For TCU, bowl trips are old hat, and the devastating rash of injuries they have suffered might affect their “want to”. Even head coach Gary Patterson hinted that missing a bowl game might not be all bad, as it would allow for more recruiting time. Baylor gets the nod.

West Virginia at Oklahoma State

OSU is the toughest road venue in the league, what with the three inches of sideline space that puts fans right on top of the field, not to mention the paddles smacking the walls. Will the fans be riled up after a narrow miss in Bedlam? Will WVU be caught looking ahead to Oklahoma? It will be difficult, but the Mountaineers are the pick to remain tied atop the league standings.

Texas Tech at Kansas State

It’s another bowl eligibility contest, and another of state of minds. Tech has lost three straight, but to Iowa State, Oklahoma and Texas, so no shame there. K-State eked out a win over Kansas, but Tech is another kettle of fish. The Red Raiders will score too much for the Wildcats to match.

Kansas at Oklahoma
Sat Nov 17      7:30 PM      FOX

Among the league title contenders, the Sooners get the easiest penultimate opponent of the regular season. OU will get some rest for its key players as it rolls over the Jayhawks.

Iowa State at Texas
Sat Nov 17      8:00 PM      LHN

ISU’s 1-3 start has been nearly washed away with five consecutive wins. It has a decent offense and a very good defense. Texas’ offense is better, but its defense is shaky at best. The Cyclones remain in the Big 12 hunt with a win in Austin.

Hoping for ISU loss. Hard to imagine I would say that but want WV to get their berth in conference championship (assuming they take care of business in Stillwater)

Yep, even though rooting for the Horns makes me a bit queasy
