Big 12 Men’s Basketball Notebook: Year In Review

West Virginia and Oklahoma State tip off Thursday's Big 12 quarterfinal action at the T-Mobile Center

• No. 1 seed Baylor captured the Big 12’s second national championship in men’s basketball with a dominating 86-70 win against overall top-seed Gonzaga in the 2021 title game. In the Final Four games against Houston and Gonzaga, the Bears outscored their opponents by a combined 35 points (164-129). BU’s average margin of victory in its five NCAA tournament victories was 15.2 points.

• Big 12 teams have made five appearances in the national championship game, including the last two – 2003 (Kansas), 2008 (Kansas), 2012 (Kansas), 2019 (Texas Tech) and 2021 (Baylor). KU won the national title in 2008.

• Sixty percent of the Big 12’s institutions have advanced to the Final Four since the league’s inception in 1996 – Kansas (2002, 2003, 2008, 2012, 2018) Oklahoma (2002, 2016), Texas (2003), Oklahoma State (2004), Texas Tech (2019) and Baylor (2021). West Virginia also advanced to the Final Four in 2010 prior to its entrance into the Big 12 in 2012.

• The Big 12 is home to a nation-high four of the 11 teams that were ranked every week of the 2020-21 season in the AP Poll – Baylor, Texas, Texas Tech and West Virginia. The AP doesn’t conduct a poll following the NCAA Tournament.

• No. 1 Baylor headlined a nation-high six Big 12 teams that were ranked in the final USA Today coaches poll at the conclusion of the season. Other ranked teams were No. 16 Kansas; No. 18 West Virginia; No. 19 Oklahoma State; No. 21 Texas; and No. 22 Texas Tech. Additionally, Oklahoma received votes.

• Baylor played in the Final Four for the first time since 1950. The Bears made the Big 12’s 11th appearance in the national semifinals. The Conference has played in 16 Final Four games with a 7-9 record.

• For the 15th time in the last 18 years of the NCAA Championship (canceled in 2020), at least one Big 12 squad advanced to the Elite Eight. The Conference has a total of 27 regional finalists during that time span with No. 1 seed Baylor’s appearance this year.

• Baylor made the Conference’s 12th appearance in the Regional semifinals since the 2016 tournament (no tournament in 2020), which is tied for second among all leagues. The Big 12’s .667 (8-4) win percentage is the best among conferences.

• Seventy percent of Big 12 teams have advanced to a Sweet 16 within the last five seasons of postseason play – Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Texas Tech and West Virginia.

• The Big 12 placed a nation-high 70 percent of its teams in the 2021 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship. The Conference had seven selections for the sixth time in the last 11 tournaments, including five seasons in the past seven years the event was conducted.

• The Big 12 also had seven selections in 2010, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2018.

• No. 3 seed Texas earned the Big 12’s automatic berth after winning its first Phillips 66 Big 12 Men’s Basketball Championship.

• The Longhorns were joined in the NCAA Tournamentby No. 1 seed Baylor, the Big 12 regular season champion, No. 3 seed Kansas, No. 8 seed Oklahoma, No. 4 seed Oklahoma State, No. 6 seed Texas Tech and No. 3 seed West Virginia. The Big 12’s average seed of 4.0 is the best in Conference history.

• The Big 12 finished over .500 (.647) in NCAA Championship competition in 2021 for the fourth straight tournament (no tournament in 2020).

• Four Big 12’1 10 programs will have new head coaches for the 2021-22 season – T.J. Otzelberger (Iowa State), Porter Moser (Oklahoma), Chris Beard (Texas) and Mark Adams (Texas Tech).

• Of the 10 head coaches for the 2021-22 season, nine have guided a team to the NCAA Tournament and six have led teams to the Final Four, tied for the most among conferences.

• The Big 12 has had six or more NCAA Tournament teams in 17 of 24 years, including eight seasons since 2012. From 2014-21, the Big 12 has 47 selections – the second-best total of any conference.

• The Big 12 compiled a 72-23 (.758) non-conference record in 2020-21 with 10 of the losses to top 25 teams. The Big 12’s win percentage was second among all conferences. The league has won at least 71 percent of its non-conference games in 21 consecutive seasons and 23 of 25 seasons all-time.

• The Big 12’s .548 (17-14) win percentage against the other five major leagues in 2020-21 was the second-highest among that group.

The Power and Light District is eerily empty prior to the Big 12 Championship.

• The Big 12’s .500 (10-10) win percentage against non-conference top 25 opponents in 2020-21 was the highest among the top six men’s basketball leagues. The 10 wins were also the most.

• The Big 12 had six teams in the top 10 for most wins against ranked opposition in 2020-21. Baylor’s 11 top 25 victories led the nation. Oklahoma State was second (9 wins), Kansas was tied for third (8), Texas was tied for sixth (7) while Oklahoma and West Virginia tied for 10th (5).

• The Big 12 was the only league that ended the 2020-21 season with seven teams and 70% percent of its membership in the top 36 of the NCAA NET ratings.

• Sixty percent of Big 12 teams were ranked in NCAA statistics for toughest 2020-21 schedule – No. 2 Oklahoma State, No. 3 West Virginia, No. 13 Baylor, No. 14. Kansas, No. 15 Texas Tech and No. 25 Oklahoma.
