Bluefield High Star Commits To WVU

West Virginia closed out its 2019 football season in strong fashion with a 20-17 victory at TCU Friday evening, and then two days later, the Mountaineers got more good news, as Bluefield (W.Va.) High School defensive end Sean Martin announced his commitment to WVU.

A 6-foot-5, 255-pound two-way lineman for the Beavers, Martin had scholarship offers from over two dozen FBS programs, including the likes of Baylor, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan State, N.C. State, Penn State, Pitt, Vanderbilt, Virginia and Virginia Tech, but ultimately decided to stay with the home state Mountaineers.

A four-star recruit, Martin appeared headed elsewhere last summer. He originally committed to the University of North Carolina, but then in August reopened his recruitment. In the four months since, Martin had remained fairly quiet about his thoughts, though WVU’s first-year head coach Neal Brown made obtaining the Bluefield star a priority.

Martin is the 15th commitment for West Virginia’s class of 2020 and the second in-state product, joining Fairmont Senior High lineman Zach Frazier (6-2, 285 lbs.), who will likely be a center for the Mountaineers.

Frazier’s Polar Bears and Martin’s Beavers met on the turf at East-West Stadium in Fairmont this past Friday night in the semifinal round of the Class AA playoffs. Fairmont Senior (12-1) earned a victory in last season’s Class AA championship game, but the Beavers got a measure of revenge this time around, scoring a 40-24 victory that will send BHS (12-1) on to a Super Six title meeting with Bridgeport (12-1) this coming Friday night at Wheeling Island Stadium.

The Beavers only loss this season came to Lord Botetourt (Va.) High School, which is currently 13-0 and will play this coming weekend in the semifinal round of Virginia’s Class 3 playoffs.

Though Martin also is a force for Bluefield in its offensive line, most colleges love his ability at defensive end, where his size and athleticism should make him a strong edge presence at the Power 5 level.
