Following a victorious performance at the Tennessee Challenge on Saturday, senior Amy Cashin of the West Virginia University track and field team has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week.
Hailing from Werribee, Australia, Cashin won the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a season-best time of 10:27.09, shedding 15.13 seconds off of her previous best set at the Virginia Challenge.
Cashin has collected wins in back-to-back meets, as she won the 1,500-meter run at the Virginia Grand Prix, on April 29.

Last Week in Baseball: West Virginia went 2-2 last week, with a 17-1 victory over Eastern Michigan followed by a trio of one-run contests against No. 4 Texas Tech, capped by a 3-2 victory in the finale … against Eastern Michigan, the Mountaineers jumped out with four runs in each of the first two innings and scored at least three runs four times … meanwhile, the WVU pitching staff kept the Eagles hitless into the seventh inning and allowed just three hits all night, as freshman starter Sam Kessler, junior reliever Shane Ennis and freshman reliever Riley Troutt held Eastern Michigan hitless for 6.1 innings … the series against Texas Tech opened with a doubleheader on Saturday after Friday’s game was rained out … TTU won the opener, 1-0, holding WVU to a season-low two hits … the Red Raiders won the second game, 4-3, after the contest was delayed for 1:19 after the fourth inning due to rain … WVU took an early 3-1 lead, but the delay forced a second consecutive rain-shortened outing for junior starter BJ Myers, who pitched 4.0 innings and allowed one run on five hits … WVU won the finale on Sunday, 3-2, thanks to two unearned runs in the fifth inning and another strong pitching performance … Jackson Sigman picked up the win and Cody Wood earned his first career save as the bullpen held Texas Tech to just three hits in the final 4.1 innings.
Notes: West Virginia improved to 27-19 on the season and is in fourth place in the Big 12 with an 11-10 record … WVU is one game out of third place and two games out of second place in the Big 12 standings … the Mountaineers are 9-6 against top-25 teams, with all but six games coming on the road … sophomore Braden Zarbnisky launched his first career home run against Eastern Michigan, while sophomore Ivan Gonzalez hit his fourth of the season … 11 Mountaineers, and all but one starter, recorded at least one hit vs. EMU, while six had at least two hits and six drove in two or more runs … junior Shane Ennis, a native of Romney, West Virginia, earned his first win of the season and second of his career against Eastern Michigan … all three games against Texas Tech were one-run games, and West Virginia held the Big 12’s best offense to five earned runs on 24 hits in the three-game series … Kyle Davis hit his eighth home run of the season and extended his on-base streak to a season-best 16 games in the TTU series, while his hitting streak was snapped at 12 games … Kyle Gray extended his on-base streak to a career-best 16 games … freshman Cody Wood pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning on Sunday to earn his first career save.
This Week in Rowing: West Virginia returns to the water on May 13 and 14 at Melton Lake, Tennessee … the Big 12 Championship is hosted by the Oak Ridge Rowing Association … the Mountaineers will join Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Texas and Big 12 affiliate members, Alabama, Old Dominion and Tennessee in the event.
