After recording a career-high 5k time at the Louisville Classic on Saturday, Oct. 2, junior Ceili McCabe of the West Virginia University cross country team has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University Apartments.
The Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, native made her 2021 cross country season debut with a career-best 5k time of 16:27.8, on Saturday, in Louisville, Kentucky.
McCabe was the first athlete of 399 runners to cross the finish line and the first of the ten Mountaineers.
This Week in Volleyball: The Mountaineers (12-3, 2-2 Big 12) are off this week … the squad travels to Manhattan, Kansas for a two-match series against Kansas State, at Ahearn Field House, from Oct. 14-15 … Thursday’s match will begin at 7:30 p.m. ET, followed by Friday’s match at 8 p.m.
Last Week in Volleyball: WVU continued Big 12 Conference play at No. 1 Texas for a two-match series at Gregory Stadium, in Austin, Texas, from Sept. 30-Oct. 1 … West Virginia suffered a pair of losses to Texas … on Thursday evening, the Longhorns took the match from the Mountaineers in set scores of 25-21, 25-11 and 25-19 … on Friday, WVU suffered a 3-0 loss in set scores of 25-16, 25-17 and 25-21… in Thursday’s match, fifth-year senior outside hitter Athena Ardila and fifth-year senior middle blocker Briana Lynch led the Mountaineers with eight kills each … they were followed by senior outside hitter Natali Petrova and junior middle blocker Emmy Ogogor who both tallied six kills … senior setter Lacey Zerwas finished the match with a team-high 28 assists, and fifth-year senior outside hitter Adrian Ell led the team with nine digs on the night … WVU finished the match hitting .135 with 34 kills and three team blocks … Friday’s match was led by Zerwas who finished by adding another double-double to the season after recording a team-high 30 assists and 12 digs … Ell led the team with nine kills on the night, while Ardila and Petrova each tallied eight kills … Petrova also tallied seven digs … WVU finished Friday’s match hitting .178 with 36 kills and 42 digs.

Last Week in Women’s Soccer: WVU dominated possession and scored a pair of goals in the second half to tally a 2-0 win over Oklahoma, on Oct. 2 … despite both teams going scoreless in the first half, freshman forward Dilary Heredia-Beltran earned the game winner just 20 minutes into the second period, off an assist from junior defender Gabrielle Robinson … sophomore midfielder Lilly McCarthy added a second goal for the Mountaineers, while freshman forward Lisa Schöppl recorded her first points of the season, earning credit for the helper on McCarthy’s score … West Virginia dominated every statistical category, leading the Sooners 16-2 in shots, as well as 7-1 in shots on goal … the Mountaineers earned four corner-kick opportunities on the afternoon, while they didn’t allow the OU offense to earn any.

This Week in Golf: The golf team will return to action on Monday, hosting the Mountaineer Invitational at Pete Dye Golf Club in Bridgeport, West Virginia … this will be the seventh consecutive Mountaineer Invitational … West Virginia won the team titles last April, in 2019 and 2018 … Bowling Green won the event in 2017, Arkansas captured the team title in 2016 and Penn State won the inaugural event in 2015 … West Virginia will be joined by 11 other teams at Pete Dye. Last Week in Rifle: WVU picked up a pair of top-10 wins over the weekend … on Oct. 2, West Virginia knocked off No. 2 Ole Miss, 4733-4683, in Oxford, Mississippi … six Mountaineers took the top-six spots on the overall leaderboard, while each of the top six tallied an aggregate score of 1175 or better … WVU also placed seven shooters in the top-10 smallbore standings and six in the top-10 air rifle standings … sophomore Tal Engler topped all three leaderboards with career bests in aggregate score (1188) and air rifle (598) … of note, Engler also tied her career-high in smallbore against the Rebels after shooting a 591 in the relay … on Oct. 3, the Mountaineers defeated No. 8 Murray State, 4725-4674, in Murray, Kentucky … WVU swept MSU in both disciplines, winning smallbore, 2351-2318, and air rifle, 2374-2356 … seven shooters placed inside the top-10 individual match leaderboard against the Racers, including Engler, who once again led WVU with a team-high aggregate score of 1181 and placed second … senior Verena Zaisberger also shot an 1181 overall and placed third.
