West Virginia defensive tackle Darius Stills was the only Mountaineer named to the 2020 Preseason All-Big 12 Football team, but he did receive one of the highest individual awards the league presents, as the senior from Fairmont, West Virginia, was named the 2020 Big 12 preseason defensive player of the year.

Media representatives who cover the league voted on the preseason teams and individual awards.

The 6-foot-1, 282-pound Stills is the fifth Mountaineer to earn an individual Big 12 preseason award since WVU joined the conference in 2012, though he is the first to win the defensive player of the year honor.

Quarterback Will Grier was named the Big 12 preseason offensive player of the year in 2018, and he was also the league’s preseason newcomer of the year in 2017. Running back Charles Sims was the Big 12 newcomer of the year in 2013, and in West Virginia’s first season as a member of the Big 12 in 2012, quarterback Geno Smith was the league preseason offensive player of the year.

After serving in a backup role in West Virginia’s defensive line as a true freshman in 2017 and as a sophomore in 2018, Stills emerged as a starter for WVU last year. He registered 47 tackles, 14.5 TFLs and tied his younger brother Dante Stills for the team lead in sacks with seven.

Darius was named a first-team all-Big 12 performer at the end of the 2019 season and now enters 2020 as the league’s preseason defensive player of the year.

Oklahoma State junior running back Chuba Hubbard garnered the Big 12’s preseason offensive player of the year honor this season, while Oklahoma redshirt freshman quarterback Spencer Rattler was voted the league’s preseason newcomer of the year.

West Virginia may have had a top individual award winner, but overall as a team, it was tied for the least recognition on the 2020 all-Big 12 preseason squads. Darius Stills was the defensive player of the year and also an all-defense honoree, but he was the only Mountaineer recognized. Baylor also had one player on the preseason team in linebacker Terrel Bernard. Every other conference program had at least two representatives on the league’s preseason team, led by Oklahoma and Texas, who had five each. Oklahoma State had four, followed by three each from Iowa State, Texas Tech and Kansas State. TCU and Kansas had two each.
