Kansas Comeback Tops WVU Yet Again

For the third straight game against Kansas, West Virginia forged a double-digit lead. And for the third straight game, the Jayhawks fought back for a victory.

KU closed on a 26-8 run in the last 7:22, turning a 61-51 Mountaineer lead into a 77-69 Kansas victory in Lawrence. The ending was so frustrating that WVU head coach Bob Huggins wasn’t around to see it, having been hit with two technicals in quick succession with 8.5 seconds left to earn an ejection.

Though Huggins was certainly upset with his team’s collapse, he also was angered by the officiating. Kansas had 35 foul shots in the game, making 26 of them. WVU garnered just two free throws, making one of them.

Daxter Miles had 22 points to lead WVU, while Jevon Carter added 11. Udoka Azubuike topped the Jayhawks’ effort with 21 points, five rebounds and three blocked shots.

With the loss, West Virginia fell to 19-8 overall and 8-6 in the Big 12. KU is now 21-6 overall and 10-4 overall

With its next game at Baylor on Tuesday, the Mountaineers will remain on the road. They’ll fly from Lawrence to Waco and then spend the next couple of days better ready for the 16-10 Bears. Tipoff time is 7 p.m., for West Virginia’s showdown with BU, and the game will be televised on ESPN2.

We can blame it on the 35-2 FT attempts…….. But we should have won this game in spite of the refs. Again we went away from what got us there and tried to slow it down and put the ball entirely in JC’s hands. Didn’t work then. Doesn’t work now.
