Following a season-best score of 67, senior Mark Goetz of the West Virginia University golf team has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University Apartments.

The Greensburg, Pennsylvania, native finished 6-under-par and tied for sixth place on the individual leaderboard to lead the Mountaineer golf team at the Seminole Intercollegiate in Tallahassee, Florida, on Feb. 19-21.

Goetz shot 1-under-par on Sunday to post a three-day score of 72-67-71=210. He recorded 18 birdies during the 54-hole tournament to tie his second-lowest, three-day total of his Mountaineer career. Goetz’s round of 67 on Saturday matched his season-best score of the abbreviated 2019-20 season.

This Week in Gymnastics: The Mountaineers (0-5, 0-5) are off this week … up next, WVU heads to Ames, Iowa, on Monday, March 1, to wrap up its Big 12 slate with No. 24 Iowa State … competition is set to begin at 7:30 p.m. ET inside the Hilton Coliseum.

Last Week in Gymnastics: West Virginia suffered a 196.550-195.350 loss to No. 9-ranked Denver on Feb. 21, inside Magness Arena, in Denver, Colorado … despite the team loss, the Mountaineers hit 23-for-24 routines to split the event titles with the Pioneers, finishing first on balance beam (49.175-49.125) and floor exercise (49.250-49.050) … the Pioneers earned the vault (49.100-48.475) and uneven bars (49.275-48.450) team victories … WVU’s beam and floor scores were good for season highs … the Mountaineers have now totaled 49.0 or better on floor in every meet but one this season …West Virginia finished the meet with four podium finishes, including a winning performance on floor and a tie for first overall on beam … junior Kendra Combs tallied a matching career-high score of 9.9 on floor for the event win … additionally, freshman Chloe Asper and Denver’s Isabel Mabanta tied for first overall on beam with matching 9.9s … the mark was a personal best for Asper, as she previously scored a 9.8 in her beam debut against Denver on Feb. 11 … freshman Kiana Lewis also tied for second on floor with a career-high 9.875, while senior McKenna Linnen finished in a three-way tie for third on beam with a matching career-high total of 9.85.

Notes: WVU will go head-to-head with ISU for the second time this season … West Virginia most recently suffered a 196.125-195.175 setback to Iowa State on Feb. 7, at the WVU Coliseum, in Morgantown … the Mountaineers finished second to the Cyclones on every event but floor … WVU is 6-12-1 all-time against ISU … West Virginia is looking for its first conference regular season win since Feb. 26, 2017 … eleven Mountaineers have competed in at least one meet this season, with nine gymnasts reaching the podium … sophomore Emily Holmes-Hackerd paces the team with 172.525 season points, followed by classmate Kianna Yancey with 155.075.

This Week in Rifle: The Mountaineers are set for the Great America Rifle Conference (GARC) Championship title on Feb. 27-28 … the match will be held virtually at the WVU Rifle Range.

Last Week in Rifle: The No. 4-ranked West Virginia University rifle team shot 4713 in an NCAA Qualifying Match on Saturday, at the Lt. Hugh W. Wylie Range, in Columbus, Ohio … West Virginia finished with marks of 2333 smallbore and 2380 air rifle … in smallbore, freshman Tal Engler shot a personal best 591, including a program-record 200 prone, and placed first … sophomore Akhitio Shimizu (100-100-100-100-98-100) won the air rifle title outright with a 598 … junior Jared Eddy placed second in smallbore with a score of 590 … sophomore Malori Brown took third after shooting a season-high 588 and freshman Molly McGhin tallied a personal best 587 for fourth … junior Verena Zaisberger rounded out the top 5 for the Mountaineers with a 585, good for fifth place … sophomore Calista Smoyer (100-98-100-99-100-100) shot a 597 in air rifle, good for second place. Zaisberger (100-99-99-99100-98) tallied a 595 and McGhin (99-99-98-100-99) shot a 593, landing them third and fourth place, respectively … five Mountaineers counted toward the team’s scores: Eddy, McGhin, Osborn, Shimizu and Smoyer.

Notes: WVU finished the regular season in a three-way tie as GARC Champions … Along with West Virginia is Kentucky and Ole Miss … Saturday’s scores will be added to the Mountaineers (7-1, 5-1 GARC) ranking average – based on the team’s top-three scores shot at three different venues – and will factor into WVU’s NCAA Championships qualifying mark … Akron and Ohio State shot alongside the Mountaineers on Saturday … Akron finished with a score of 4683, while Ohio State shot a team total of 4661.

This Week in Swimming and Diving: The Mountaineers are set to open postseason action with two weeks of competition at the 2021 Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championship, from Feb. 24-27 and March 1-3, at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center, in Austin, Texas … the swimming teams begin the conference meet this week from Feb. 24-27, before the diving teams arrive in Austin to complete the conference meet from March 1-3.

Notes: West Virginia returns to the Big 12 Championship after the men’s team finished second in 2020, and the women’s team finished in third place … WVU collected 11 medals in 2020, hosting the conference championship at the Aquatic Center at Mylan Park, in Morgantown, for the first time in program history.

Last Week in Women’s Basketball: WVU earned an 81-78, bounce-back win over TCU in Morgantown on Feb. 20 … the Mountaineers (17-3, 11-3 Big 12) were led by sophomore forward Esmery Martinez who posted her 11th double-double of the season, with a team-high 21 points and 12 rebounds … she was followed by four double-figure performances from sophomore guard Kirsten Deans (15 points), redshirt senior guard Kysre Gondrezick (14 points), junior guard Jasmine Carson (12 points) and junior forward Karri Niblack (11 points) … the game marked the final home contest for Gondrezick, who was honored prior to tip-off on Senior Day.

Last Week in Track and Field: The Mountaineers distance medley relay team led the way with a third-place finish on the first night of competition at the Camel City Invitational, held in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, at the JDL Fast Track Indoor Track and Field, on Feb. 19 … the team of freshman Ceili McCabe, freshman Jo-Lauren Keane, junior Tessa Constantine and redshirt junior Hayley Jackson crossed the finish line in the distance medley relay in 11:16.8 to take third place … Virginia Tech took first place with a time of 11:11.8, and NC State followed behind in second place with a finishing time of 11:15.9 … North Carolina followed West Virginia in fourth place, finishing with a time of 11:22.3 … Wake Forest finished with a time of 11:25.8, good for fifth place … two athletes represented WVU in Saturday’s competition … Keane paced the Mountaineers, finishing in fifth place in the women’s 800-meter run with a time of 2:12.5 … classmate and junior Mikenna Vanderheyden registered a sixth-place finish on Saturday, in the women’s one-mile run with a 4:51.57 finishing time.

This Week in Tennis: West Virginia is off this week … the Mountaineers return to the court on Friday, March 5, against VCU … WVU welcomes the Rams to the Summit Tennis Academy in Morgantown next week, with first serve scheduled for 11 a.m. ET.

Last Week in Tennis: The Mountaineers began its 2021 spring season with a 7-0 win over Cleveland State on Feb. 19 … juniors Anastasiia Bovolskaia and Nicole Roc, along with freshmen Nadya Maslova and Momoko Nagato, each tallied two wins against the Vikings … WVU went 2-1 as a team in doubles play, before sweeping CSU, 6-0, in singles … in all, the Mountaineers collected five two-set wins in singles and won seven overall sets by four points or more.
