Mountaineers Picked Third In Big 12 Men’s Basketball Preseason Poll

The Big 12 Conference men’s basketball coaches have made their predictions, and their preseason projection is West Virginia will finish third this coming season.

It was no surprise who was at the top. For the eighth straight season and 18th time overall, Kansas tops the men’s basketball Big 12 Preseason Poll. The Jayhawks received all of the possible nine first-place votes in 2018-19 for the fourth consecutive season.

KU has captured 18 outright or shared Big 12 regular season championships in the previous 22 campaigns.  The program’s 14 consecutive and 61 overall conference titles are both NCAA records.

West Virginia head coach Bob Huggins has a pregame discussion with Kansas coach Bill Self.

The Jayhawks will have a new look in 2018-19 with a younger and deeper team. Returning starters Udoka Azubuike and Lagerald Vick both averaged double figures last year with 13.0 and 12.1 points, respectively. Nine newcomers join the squad with six freshmen and three transfers who are eligible this seas

Kansas State was picked second in the preseason poll followed by West Virginia in third. TCU and Texas tied for fourth to round out the top five. Other placings were 6. Iowa State, 7. Texas Tech, 8. Oklahoma, 9. Baylor and 10. Oklahoma State.

The Big 12 led the nation in RPI four of the last five years. For the first time in Conference history, the Big 12 sent 90 percent of its men’s basketball teams to postseason play in 2018 with seven in the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship and two in the National Invitation Tournament. Kansas, Kansas State, Texas Tech and West Virginia advanced to the Sweet 16 while Kansas punched a ticket to the 2018 Final Four.

Hate to be a homer but that is ridiculous. I’d guess we should be co-favorites with Kansas at worst.

This should be a seecial season.

    K-State? Second place? Seriously?

That in and of itself totally invalidates this “poll.” But, after what the football team has put me through lately, I truly appreciated the laugh…

This is the coaches poll. Couple of thoughts:

    1) K-State should be really good. They have a bunch of people back, and they are going to be really improved, I believe.

    2) WVU’s backcourt is either unproven or banged up. I agree there’s potential, but until we see Knapper or McCabe or Haley play well, and until Beetle gets healthy or shows he can play through his injuries, I understand why WVU isn’t at the top.

    3) I think everyone other than OSU and Baylor will be better than they were last year. Will WVU? I feel like a broken record on this, but there is no way to overestimate the impact JC had on the defensive end. He probably disrupted 200 possessions last year. That’s a huge gap to make up.

Front court looks good for WV, but someone with little to no experience needs to prove they can be the point guard. If it’s Beetle, that will be a bad sign. He has the most experience but is better suited for shooting guard. I’m ok with third place prediction. If they over deliver it will be all the more satisfying.

Definitely agree it would be better if Beetle can play off the ball. That frees him for a bit more shooting, and it also gives WVU another adequate ballhandler if teams try to make the point give the ball up early. I think Knapper and McCabe can do it, but we’re definitely in wait and see mode there. I do like the way they distribute in transition, so that’s one good building block.
