I have no problem with a game there, if it’s when the students are on break and it is against a non P5.

Ha, I had typed up a much wordier way of saying the same thing last week when the poll went live briefly. I totally agree. It gives those in the southern part of the state a chance to see the Mountaineers without traveling great distances without giving up the benefits of a home game (i.e. – student section and home court advantage against competitive opponent). One would think that playing, say, VMI in Charleston over winter break would draw at least equal to, if not better than, playing VMI in Morgantown on the same date.

    Sounds good to me, too.

Ditto and NOT MooU. If MooU wants to play us, they come to Morgantown. We don’t split 50/50 with any OOC that we play at home (or Charleston).

Funny, the comments in this thread (one game against a non-P5 opponent) run contrary to Lyons’ quote in Part 6 of his interview series. He said that the complaint from Charleston is that the opponents weren’t very good. That’s probably true if you want to pack out the Civic Center. That’s probably not true if your goal is to draw close to home attendance without giving up a home court advantage. I also don’t understand why attendance isn’t better for a non-P5 opponent. I get that folks want to see WVU play marquee teams, but isn’t the chance to see the Mountaineers without making a 2+ hour trek to Morgantown enough to buy a ticket?

100% agree, and fortunately for us, WVU and Bob Huggins agree too.

Perhaps a west coast team such as a UCLA or an Indiana. Something that can hold weight especially during the Christmas break. Could also be a team such as a Wichita State. Instead of a VMI or William Mary. Doesn’t have to be a P5 school but a higher up team in a G5 level.

A game in Charleston against a weak opponent isn’t worth it. I voted yes for a game there and it should be a worthy opponent. I like Lyon’s suggestion of a neutral court 1 for 1 with a good team. Don’t bother scheduling a game there against VMI. I was in Charleston years back when they played Oklahoma in the Civic Center. Close game and the crowd was electric.

Playing Marshall every year is just a bad idea. Good grief, they had one of their best teams ever last year and we made them look like a rec team.

In short, YES. And I grew up in Morgantown. As addressed, our friends and supporters in not only the Charleston metro area deserve it, so does the rest of the southern part of our state. It’s not rocket science that a game there benefits the SCHOOL. In a multitude of ways. And politics should NOT dictate who the opponent is. It should be a quality opponent, and one that is willing to trade a “neutral” site the next season (or vice versa). These contracts are, and should be reviewed annually, as is already done in basketball. There are multiple possibilities, some of which may even become extended. Any AD worth his salt should be able to secure that.

To reiterate, to HELL with the politicians, regardless of party affiliation. To add, it’s absolutely DISGRACEFUL that politicians have had their greedy, self-serving hands in this game in the past. ( As anyone with an IQ above 50 have long ago figured out.)

    I’ve said my piece.
