The Sugar Bowl, it put us on the map.

The Orange Bowl put us square into the national spotlight for the following year going into the Big 12.

The Sugar was huge, but it was still just a Big East team with an upset win over the SEC Champs.

The Orange was a huge beatdown of a team that has gone on to be nationally dominant ever since.

Orange was no better than 3rd and really when I think about it, my 4th favorite on the list. Clemson wasn’t really all that, and it certainly didn’t carry over with any momentum for the next year.

The Sugar was big but in my mind the most important was the Fiesta Bowl win over Oklahoma.

Definitely different ways to look at it. National impact? Rating of opponent?

I went with the 1981 Peach Bowl on a different angle. It was that win, along with the 82 opener over Oklahoma, that pushed WVU into more notice on the national scene, and was really important to the program. Of course, the new stadium, the hiring of Don Nehlen, etc. were also big parts of that ascension, but that win was really a big step up. Plus, it was really unexpected.

The ’81 Peach Bowl plus the ’82 opener certainly the best back-to-back victories ever. As for the other bowl wins, I’m just still enjoying them.

Had such a long stretch between bowl wins in the 80s and 90s that we do need to appreciate them.

It has been frustrating losing games like the Heart of Dallas, the Pinstripe and the Liberty. Those were winnable contests that were derailed in a couple of cases by lack of interest.
