WVU Adds Long Island To 2021 Football Schedule
BlueGoldNews.com has confirmed a 2021 schedule change for the Mountaineer football team. Originally reported by FBSchedules.com, West Virginia will host Long Island in football in 2021. The Sharks, making the move to FCS this year after combining two of their satellite campus athletics programs, are scheduled to play in Morgantown on Sept. 11, 2021. The merger of the two programs, which was announced last October, also resulted in a move up to Division I from the previous Division II standing of the LIU Brooklyn and LIU Post programs.
Also confirmed with a West Virginia school source is the fact that Indiana State asked to be released from the game, which West Virginia approved. That left the Mountaineers with a short term schedule hole, and not a lot of options to fill it. LIU, moving up in status and searching for non-conference games, was a willing opponent. WVU will pay LIU $475,000 for the contest.
The Mountaineers have two Power 5 games scheduled in 2021 — a visit to Maryland the week before the LIU game, and a home contest against Virginia Tech the week afterward.
LIU, playing in the Northeast Conference, began its season last week with a 38-3 loss to South Dakota State.
