St. Georges’ Goal Earns WVU Student Athlete Of The Week Honors

After registering the No. 9-ranked women’s soccer team’s first goal of the 2018 season, senior defender Bianca St. Georges has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University Apartments.

A two-time team captain, St. Georges connected on a penalty kick in the 61st minute against Arkansas on Aug. 19 and helped the Mountaineers comeback for a 1-1 (2OT) draw against the Razorbacks at the Penn State Invitational at Jeffrey Field in University Park, Pennsylvania. The goal was the third career score for St. Georges.

The Mountaineer defense was solid against the Razorbacks, allowing only three shots on-goal and four corner kicks.

WVU opened the weekend with a 1-0 loss at No. 4 Penn State on Aug. 17. The Mountaineer defense denied the Nittany Lions a shot through the first 44 minutes of the match and allowed just seven shots all game.

This Week in Women’s Soccer: The No. 9 Mountaineers (0-1-1) continue their season-opening road swing at the Purdue Tournament on Aug. 24-26, in West Lafayette, Indiana … WVU kicks against the host Boilermakers on Friday, Aug. 24, at 7 p.m., before taking on Northwestern on Sunday, Aug. 24, at noon.

Last Week in Women’s Soccer: WVU opened its 2018 campaign with an 0-1-1 showing at the Penn State Invitational over the weekend at Jeffrey Field in University Park, Pennsylvania … the Mountaineers dropped an 0-1 decision to No. 4 Penn State on Aug. 17, before fighting back for a 1-1 (2OT) draw against Arkansas on Aug. 19 … WVU denied PSU a shot through the first 44 minutes of the match, but a goal in the 80th minute proved too much to overcome … on Sunday, WVU allowed a Razorback goal in the 16th minute, but senior defender Bianca St. Georges’ penalty kick in the 61st minute evened the score and helped WVU come home with a point … the WVU defense allowed a combined seven shots on-goal all weekend … junior Rylee Foster made a combined five saves … senior forward Sh’Nia Gordon paced the field Friday with three shots, while St. Georges tallied five shots Sunday.

Notes: Four Mountaineers earned their first career starts this weekend – senior midfielder Nadya Gill, sophomore midfielder Stefany Ferrer-vanGinkle and forward Lauren Segalla and freshman defender Jordan Brewster … Sunday was the first-ever meeting between the Mountaineers and the Razorbacks.

This Week in Men’s Soccer: The Mountaineers open the 2018 season with a pair of matches this weekend in Charleston, South Carolina … the season begins on Friday, Aug. 24, at 7:30 p.m. ET, at the College of Charleston … West Virginia concludes the opening weekend with a neutral-site contest against UNC Wilmington on Sunday, Aug. 26, at 2 p.m.

Last Week in Men’s Soccer: West Virginia played two preseason exhibition matches, capped by a 3-0 victory at home over Mount St. Mary’s on Sunday … WVU opened preseason practice on Aug. 7.

Last Season in Volleyball: The Mountaineers saw their historic 2017 season end in the second-to-last match of the postseason, as the team dropped a three-set match to Ole Miss in an National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC) Semifinal matchup at the Gillom Athletics Performance Center, in Oxford, Mississippi, on Dec. 9 … WVU finished the year with 21 wins for the first time since a 26-11 campaign in 1991, the only time before 2017 that the Mountaineers made the postseason … with 21 wins, fourth-year coach Reed Sunahara earned his highest win total as head coach of the Mountaineers … additionally, West Virginia has steadily risen in the Big 12 Conference in Sunahara’s first three seasons, ending the 2017 campaign in fifth place for WVU’s best finish since joining the league in 2012 … the Mountaineers closed their 2017 regular season by winning three of their last four Big 12 matches, most notably upsetting No. 14 Kansas at the Horejsi Family Athletics Center in Lawrence, Kansas, on Nov. 25, to capture their first-ever win over a top-25 opponent.

Notes: The 2018 campaign marks the program’s 44th season … WVU will play 15 home matches inside the WVU Coliseum, as the team is led by junior captains Gabrielle Cuckovich and Erin Slinde … the Mountaineers also will face seven teams that made the NCAA Tournament last season, as well as three teams that played in the NIVC Tournament … after welcoming Georgia Southern, Penn and Wright State for the annual WVU Invitational in the first official weekend of play, the Mountaineers will travel to Provo, Utah, for the BYU Nike Invitational …. West Virginia will go head-to-head with three teams (BYU, Stanford and Wichita State) ranked in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Preseason Poll from Aug. 30-Sept. 1.
