The Mountaineer basketball team had a lead over Texas for all but 1.8 seconds of the second half Saturday afternoon at the WVU Coliseum, but that provided the No. 4 Longhorns with just enough time to pull out a 72-70 victory.
No. 14 West Virginia missed three free throws in the final 1:05, including the front end of a one-and-one by Derek Culver with the Mountaineers up by three and then two misses on a two-shot foul by Emmitt Matthews with WVU up one with 10.8 second left.
Texas came down after Matthews’ two misses and found Andrew Jones open in the corner for a three-pointer that proved to be the difference.
