“We beat the team that beat the team that beat the team.”

In 1993, the 10-0 Mountaineers visited Boston College in their regular season finale.  Those same Eagles had already beaten a No. 1 Notre Dame team. Late in the game West Virginia found itself in trouble.  Trailing 14-9 with under two minutes remaining, the WVU defense stepped up and forced a fumble, putting the ball back in Darren Studstill’s hands.

A few plays later, Mountaineer offense responded …

A lot was made about how West Virginia did not deserve to play for the national championship over Florida State or Nebraska, because the Mountaineers supposedly played a weaker schedule. West Virginia’s argument, as stated by Mountaineer head coach Don Nehlen, “We beat the team (Boston College) that beat the team (Notre Dame) that beat the team (Florida State).”

Unfortunately, the Mountaineers would go on to lose in the Sugar Bowl against a solid Florida team, 41-7.  But, my-oh-my, what a season it was!

Great comeback. Fumble recovery when BC was driving to ice the game wasn’t shown, but it was huge.

I was at BC covering this game in ’93 for the Blue & Gold News. I was in the end zone taking photos when Ed Hill caught the pass right in front of me. I was so entranced, I didn’t take a single photo. Same thing happened to me a number of years later when Jarrod West hit the three-pointer to beat Cincinnati in Boise. I’ve missed some potentially great photos over the years because I get too busy watching and don’t pay attention to actually pushing the shutter button.
