Today’s BGN Memorable Moment (Day 5)

During the 2003 season, the Mountaineers found themselves in Miami down by six points with just over two minutes remaining in the Orange Bowl.  With the ball on the Miami 24-yard line, WVU quarterback Rasheed Marshall called his cadence from the shotgun.  The West Virginia signal caller was expecting the Hurricanes to bring the heat, but the blitz didn’t come.

The screen play that had been called initially looked to be a dud, but Quincy Wilson somehow worked some magic. With Miami defensive players hitting the grass left and right, the Mountaineer running back would not be denied the end zone.  With only one Hurricane remaining in his way, Wilson bowled over Brandon Meriweather. The Miami defender was brutally ran over, and then hurdled, as Wilson gave us ESPN’s 2003 Top Play of the Year.

That was a great run after the catch!

One of the greatest runs in WVU history. At least 4 Miami players had a shot at him and the final one just got run over. I’m sure many of us watching thought that was a game winner but Miami had other ideas.

That was a crushing end to that game. After Q’s catch and run, I thought WVU would win it, but Winslow’s 4th down catch bailed Miami out.

Still, that game turned WV’s season in a good direction. They seemed to gain confidence from it.

Good point. Sometimes events like this crush a team’s morale, and sometimes it helps them come together.

I can still remember Winslow’s one handed diving over the head catch. And me screaming at the TV wondering how we could let a TE get in back of the D. All we needed to do was keep him in front of us and we didn’t.
