WATCH: Jerry West and the Mountaineers vs. Kentucky in 1957 KIT
In the build up to Saturday’s showdown between West Virginia and Kentucky, we continue to look back at this series. Today, we highlight one of the most iconic moments in Mountaineer basketball history – the 1957 Kentucky Invitational Tournament. Jerry West, a sophomore forward for WVU who was playing his first season on the varsity squad, led the Mountaineers to Lexington for an early season two-game test against the No. 5 Wildcats and No. 1 North Carolina. West Virginia swept those games on back-to-back nights to vault WVU to the No. 1 ranking in the country. WVU would spend nine weeks atop the A.P. poll that season, the only time in program it has ever been ranked No. 1.
Below is WVU’s highlight film from that historic 1957-58, including rare footage from that memorable KIT sweep.
