Oliver Straw

West Virginia has added a punter to its football class of 2022, following a familiar path in looking overseas in obtaining its latest verbal commitment.

Straw has worked with ProKick Australia, the leading international developer of kickers. Over the last 15 years, that organization, headed by Nathan Chapman, has put some 75 specialists into U.S. college scholarships and pro contracts. Included in that number is former WVU punter Josh Growden, who punted for WVU for one year in 2019 after transferring from LSU. Growden now runs his own coaching and kicking development business in Australia (TheKickingConsultant.com), and is also affiliated with ProKick.

Unlike Growden, who like most of ProKick alums is a native Australian, Straw has a U.S. background.

“I was born in New Jersey, but our family moved from the USA, to England, to Thailand, then to Australia in 2007,” the well-traveled punter told BlueGoldNews.com. “I’ve lived in Australia for the past 12 years.”

The six-foot, two-inch, 220-pounder has shown excellent hang time and distance on his boots, earning the scholarship offer from the Mountaineers.

Straw is the 18th commitment in the football class of 2022. With the one-year waiver allowing as many as seven additional scholarships to be awarded in the class, WVU still has as many as 14 open slots in this year’s class. Some of those will likely be held for transfers and additions during the spring signing period.

WVU currently lists five punters on its roster, including senior Tyler Sumpter, who is in his last season of eligibility. Redshirt junior Evan Matthes, redshirt sophomores Leighton Bechdel and Kolton McGhee and redshirt freshman Danny King are expected to compete next year with Straw for punting duties.

    Welcome aboard Mr. Straw

McGhee is the only schollie punter on the team returning. Rest are Walk Ons.
Staley is the only Kicker on schollie also. ….. Unless Legg was given a schollie that I haven’t seen yet. So, I wouldn’t be surprised to see a K given a schollie.
