WVU Football Adds More Postseason Honors

West Virginia linebacker Josh Chandler-Semedo celebrates a third-down stop

West Virginia’s football program has seen three additional players earn notice this week for their play in the 2020 football season.

Junior linebacker Josh Chandler-Semedo was named to ESPN’s all-Bowl team for his performance in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl. The Mountaineer standout earned defensive MVP honors after recording 13 tackles, forcing a fumble and picking off a pass in the final minute in WVU’s 24-21 win. Ten of the tackles were solo stops.

The performance capped a productive season in which Chandler-Semedo had 64 tackles in nine games, including four for losses.

True freshmen Zach Frazier and Akheem Mesidor were also noticed, earning selection to ESPN’s True Freshman All-America team. Frazier made the rare leap from high school to college offensive line starter in his initial year.

ESPN noted: “The Mountaineers quickly benefited from keeping Frazier, a top in-state prospect, at home. The former three-star started all but one game this season at two different positions, including the final eight games at left guard. Frazier’s production was recognized by coaches inside and outside the program, as he was named the team’s offensive lineman of the week twice and was an all-conference honorable mention selection as well.”

On the defensive side, Mesidor, benefiting from the presence of Darius and Dante Stills, became a force of his own at defensive end.

ESPN: “During the spring of his junior season, we felt Mesidor, who then held only one Power 5 offer, was an under-the-radar prospect. He was rated four stars but was outside of the ESPN 300. The Mountaineers’ top-rated prospect in the 2020 class proved to be an excellent addition, finishing his freshman season with 6.5 tackles for loss and a team-high five sacks. He was named second-team All-Big 12.”
