WVU Gains Commitment From Ohio Offensive Lineman Maurice Hamilton

Maurice Hamilton

With on-campus visitations back open, West Virginia’s football program is wasting little time in bringing recruits to Morgantown.

One of those recent visits that resulted in a verbal commitment is a massive Ohio offensive lineman. Maurice Hamilton, a 6-foot-4, 345-pound class of 2022 product from Cleveland Heights, Ohio, visited the Mountaineer campus this weekend, and announced his commitment on Monday evening.

Hamilton picked WVU over offers from Iowa State, Purdue, Marshall and a number of Mid-American Conference programs.

In line to be a four-year starter at Cleveland Heights High School, he helped the Tigers to a 5-3 record this past season and a pair of Lake Erie League crowns during his career.

Hamilton has played mainly offensive guard for Cleveland Heights, and he’ll likely remain at that position once he moves into the college ranks.

Hamilton is the third offensive line prospect to commit to West Virginia in the class of 2022, joining Charlie Katarincic (6-5, 280 lbs.) of Choate Rosemary Hall in Connecticut and Sullivan Weidman (6-6, 300 lbs.) of Dexter School in Massachusetts. Katarancic was also at West Virginia this past weekend.

Hamilton is the first of three players who are believed to have made commitments to the Mountaineer program over the weekend.

All recruits can sign binding National Letters of Intent with the colleges of their choice starting Dec. 15, 2021.

    BIG young man…

    Welcome Mr. Hamilton

I know this is not going to be a popular opinion. Oversized kid, not very quick at all where I would characterize him as slow. Doesn’t seem to have a whole lot of upper body strength and after watching about 15 – 20 min worth of highlights, everything was a running play that I saw. I can’t make any assessment on any kind of pass blocking skills which is a concern. The blocks I did see him make on running plays he was simply much larger than his opponent and didn’t really seem to overpower anyone, just get in the way. High school football that can work, not sure that works at this level. Dante Stills would have had a highlight reel playing against a player like this.

Am I wrong? I hope that I am but I just don’t see it. Any input would be greatly appreciated, is Neal Brown is obviously seeing something that I’m not, I’m just curious as to what that is.

ISU and Purdueseemed to think differently but looking at the vids I can’t say you’re wrong.  Kids that size in HS usually dominate with sheer size.  He needs to shed 30 lbs and add muscle.  That will/should help with his quickness.

Nice to see  Neal filling up the bigs this early.

Not to worry about his size. He will be given good food and lots of weight room work.  He will gain muscle and lose at least 30 pounds which will still have him at a huge size.  If not needed next year he will red shirt which gives him an entire year to become a super player.

Agreed that Hamilton doesn’t look quite as mobile as some of the other OL commits, I think his slotting as a guard fits well and that he has good qualities there. Shouldn’t get knocked off the ball and has the body build suited for that position.

I think OLs often have a lot of technique work to improve upon with making the jump from HS to college, maybe more than any spot other than QBs and corners.

Hopefully we get to the point of RS’ing all FR OL, lettingthem.develop skills and muscle the 2nd year and fight for 2 deep as SO’s.
