Coming off a 5-7 campaign in 2019, West Virginia received no votes in this year’s preseason Coaches’ poll. It’s the second straight season the Mountaineers began the year without a single vote.

The last time WVU was ranked in the Coaches’ preseason poll was in 2018, when it entered the year 20th. It was also 20th in 2017 but was unranked in 2013-16. The only preseason it even received any votes during that four-year stretch was in 2015, when it garnered three votes, which placed it 44th.

The only time in the past decade that West Virginia started a season unranked but finished in the top 25 of the Coaches’ poll was in 2016 when it went from a team that received no votes in the preseason but concluded the year 10-3 and No. 17. Over the last 10 years, WVU also finished a season ranked in the Coaches’ poll in 2018 (22nd) and 2011 (18th).

The other major college football poll, the Associated Press, has not released its preseason rankings yet, but it is expected to come out in the next couple of weeks.

With the Big 5 dogs playing all teams in their conference this year, it should raise some interesting rankings as the year progresses. With the SEC having rankings 3-4-5-8-11-13, the B10 having rankings
2-7-12-15-18-23, there should be a few more losses than their usual number with split conference schedules of the past. The same can probably be said of the ACC with 1-10-19-24 rankings and the B12 with 6-14-16-25. And a couple of those B12 losses could be at the hands of a no-point ranked WVU! The finals will probably have the usual suspects from among Clemson ,tOSU, Alabama, Georgia, Oklahoma, etc. The situational schedules might finally give Oregon a shot at the playoffs because of their schedule. Covid-19 saved them from tOSU! LSU will be different with a new QB!

Does anyone really think WVU would be ranked inside of the top 25?  No votes doesn’t surprise me.

A good season would be 5-5.

No surprise here, year 2 of the current shuffled staff.  I don’t expect anything really until possibly next year or year 4
