Mountaineer officials announced that the home opener for the West Virginia University men’s basketball team against Youngstown State, slated for Wednesday, Dec. 2, has been postponed due to the Penguins pausing team activities related to COVID-19.

WVU is still scheduled to start its season with three games at the Bad Boy Mowers Crossover Classic Nov. 25-27 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Northern Iowa is the first opponent for the Mountaineers in that tournament, as WVU will face off with the Panthers at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 25. That game will be televised by ESPN, and all the Crossover Classic contests will be televised by ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPNU.

West Virginia’s home opener originally was going to be Dec. 2 against YSU, but now the Mountaineers’ first game in the WVU Coliseum will be Wednesday, Dec. 9 against Robert Morris. Prior to that the Mountaineers are scheduled to face Georgetown in Washington, D.C. on Sunday, Dec. 6.

West Virginia’s announcement on the postponement of its game with Youngstown State said the two schools are hoping to reschedule the game with a mutually agreeable date in December. More information will be released as it becomes available.

YSU with problems thru the end of Nov, what is the chance the 12-2 game happens.  You would think that Huggs would have a backup for this game.  Lots of teams still looking for OOC early Dec games.  Every game early in the season will make this team better later in the year.

It’s kind of hard to have a backup for a game when more than half of DI still doesn’t have a full schedule in place.

The good news for that is that there should be some options, but if teams are canceling road trips or many games in this time frame, there may not be a big pool of potential replacements.

The first option as noted in the story, is to try to find a date to resched sometime later in Dec. As Jerrod Calhoun is the coach at YSU, WVU will do what it can to get it rescheduled and played, but its on YSU at this point.
