WVU – NC State Game Will Not Be Played This Weekend

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Hurricane Florence, one of the strongest storms in history projected for a U.S. landfall, has caused the West Virginia – N.C. State game this weekend to be at least postponed, if not cancelled.

“NC State will not play its scheduled football game with West Virginia University this weekend due to the increasing likelihood of severe and unsafe conditions associated with Hurricane Florence,” an official statement from the Wolfpack athletic department said.

Hurricane Florence heads toward the US coast

Only four hurricanes in recorded history have made landfall north of Florida, and Florence will join that group. No storm of that strength has ever made landfall so far north, but this storm, which has defied usual tracks for ones born in the region, is set to make its own record. While the track could move north or south by as much as 150 miles, it will still impact the Carolinas with unprecedented force.

WVU has no information this time on the game being rescheduled, from either within or from NC State.

“Emergency management resources are expected to be fully utilized and needed throughout the region, and today’s decision will help give ample time to deploy those resources across the state,” the official statement continued. “NC State has worked in partnership with University leadership, West Virginia University officials, the Atlantic Coast Conference and emergency management personnel to arrive at a decision in the best interests of the safety and well-being of fans, student-athletes and all parties involved.”

Should this game be rescheduled or a replacement home game be scheduled, tickets for the West Virginia game will be valid.  If this game or a replacement home game is not viable, a refund will be offered to season ticket holders. Details will be communicated at a later date. With the impending weather, the NC State Athletic Department and Ticket Office will follow in accordance with campus and be closed Thursday and Friday.

NC State had previously announced that it was closing the school at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday until further notice.

At face value, it seems easy to just flip the H – H with NCSt. But the reality of it all is that it’s a major undertaking. What do you do with the season ticket holders? charge them again? What if they don’t / can’t get to the game? Hotel rooms for NCSt fans? Logistics of playing a game is overwhelming. Food, Security, staff, parking assistance, police, trash, media, field operations, etc……… That’s just for the stadium. How do you pull this together in 5 days?

Then there’s hotels, restaurants, parking and all the things that need to be in place for the influx of fans to Morgantown. And that’s not taking into consideration the races going on at the same time that were probably booked at least a year in advance.

Play on Sunday? Possible but how do you get your team to the site on Sat morning to prep for the game when the state is still under mandatory evacuation.

Playing at a neutral field is a possibility, but not our responsibility.

    This is 2018 not 2017.
