WVU Picked Seventh In Big 12 Preseason Baseball Poll


The West Virginia University baseball team has been picked to finish seventh in the 2020 Big 12 Conference Preseason Poll.

The Mountaineers earned 26 points in the poll, which is voted on by all nine of the conference’s head coaches. WVU also secured one first-place vote.

For the third consecutive year, Texas Tech was selected to win the league. The Red Raiders gathered 62 points and six first-place votes. Oklahoma State (52 points) was picked to finish second, while TCU, which also collected a first-place vote, was tabbed third with 45 points. Oklahoma (40 points) and Texas (38 points) rounded out the top five.

Baylor was picked to finished sixth in the Big 12, earning 35 points. After WVU, Kansas State (15 points) and Kansas (11 points) were selected eighth and ninth, respectively. Along with Texas Tech, TCU and WVU, Texas also earned a first-place vote in the poll.

Coaches were not permitted to vote for their own team.

The Mountaineers finished 38-22 last season, including a 13-11 mark in the Big 12. The squad, which hosted its first NCAA Regional since 1955, finished fourth in the conference regular-season standings, before advancing to the Big 12 Championship Final for the second time in four years. Additionally, WVU is one of two Big 12 teams to play in the Big 12 Championship Semifinals in four consecutive seasons.

In all, WVU has finished in the top four in the final Big 12 standings in four of its first seven years in the league.

West Virginia begins the 2020 campaign on Friday, Feb. 14, with a three-game series at Jacksonville at the Dolphins’ John Sessions Stadium. The squad’s home opener at Monongalia County Ballpark is slated for Feb. 18, against Canisius.
