WVU Rankings Check
West Virginia’s men’s and women’s basketball teams continued to either move up or hold steady in various rankings after a week of games at the conclusion of the finals week.
In the NCAA Evaluation Tool (NET) rankings, the men stayed steady at No. 10 after their win over Youngstown State on Saturday. Even with that lofty rating, the Mountaineers are just third among Big 12 teams, behind Kansas (No. 5) and Baylor (No. 6). WVU faces No. 2 Ohio State on Sunday.
Other Big 12 teams in the Top 50 are Texas Tech (No. 30), Oklahoma State (No. 42) and Oklahoma (No. 43).
The NET is the one of the major, though not the only, metric used by the NCAA Selection Committee to pick and seed teams for the NCAA Tournament. Committee members are allowed to use any sources of information they wish in helping make their decisions. The NCAA does not release all of the methodologies and formulas in calcuating the NET, but did share some information when it was implemented last year.
In the KenPom Ratings, another well-respected system, WVU stands 23rd, behind conference mates Kansas (No. 4) and Baylor (No. 9).
WVU is No. 22 in the latest AP poll, where it is the lowest-ranked one-loss team in the Top 25. Michigan, Michigan State and Kentucky, all with three losses, are ahead of the Mountaineers.
In the Ratings Percentage Index, previously used as a primary metric by the men’s selection committee, the Mountaineers are No. 2, behind No. 1 Kansas. Oklahoma (No. 10), Oklahoma State (No. 19), Baylor (No. 25) and Texas (No. 46) are also in the Top 50 in that system.
The women’s team also made jumps up the boards after a successful weekend with wins over Michigan State and Syracuse. The Mountaineers are 19th in the AP poll, and stand 42nd in the RPI, which is still used by the women’s selection committee in their NCAA deliberations.
Each team has one December non-conference game remaining before embarking on their Big 12 schedules, though at different ends of the difficulty spectrum. The women host Cornell on New Year’s Eve at the Coliseum, while the men travel to Cleveland for the Ohio State game on Sunday, Dec. 29.
