WVU The East Region Five-Seed In NCAA Tournament

Mountaineers Open Play Friday In San Diego

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Go west, young man.

West Virginia is a five-seed in the East Region of the NCAA Tournament. The Mountaineers (24-10) will take on 13-seed Murray State (26-5) on Friday in San Diego. With a win, WVU would face the winner of four-seed Wichita State and 13-seed Marshall – which reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 31 years – on Sunday.

The East Region top seed is Villanova. The Wildcats face LIU-Brooklyn in Pittsburgh. Virginia Tech and Alabama are the 8-9 match-up, and the Mountaineers would face one of those four teams if it advances to the Sweet 16. That game would be played in Boston.

WVU lost to Kansas in the Big 12 Championship title game on Saturday. Murray State gained the automatic bid out of the Ohio Valley Conference by winning the tournament title. The Racers beat Belmont 68-51 in the final and have won 13 in a row. The Mountaineers are 10-2 all-time versus OVC teams but have never played Murray State.

It is West Virginia’s 29th NCAA Tournament appearance. The Mountaineers have now reached the tournament for four consecutive seasons and for the ninth time in Bob Huggins’ 11 years. The Mountaineers are 29-28 all-time in the tourney, and have won at least two games to advance to the Sweet 16 four different times under Huggins.

I go on record as predicting a 5 seed. I may not be Lunadri in collecting coin for my guesses, but my method is simple, as it relates to WVU: Predict where I think WVU deserves to be, based on merit–then drop two seeds. Listen to the bobbleheads and drop one seed. Voila!

But this season, I think they wound up where they deserve, based on the season-ending collapse. And I like the first round matchup and the region. I think its winnable.

Agree with NoPitty about the matchup/region. Win two out west, and we’ll get a regional site (Boston) reasonably close to home.

The drop to a 5 seed might have been a procedural bump. We’ll know if and when the NCAA releases the S-curve.

“Season-ending collapse” might be a little harsh. WVU is 8-4 in February/March, including five wins against teams in the tournament.

Agree collapse is a little strong. They slipped on the February ice but recovered somewhat late.

The full seeding list (S-curve) has been released.

Texas Tech was 12th (the bottom 3 seed); WVU 18th (the second 5 seed), so there were no procedural bumps were we were concerned.

There was some seed-shuffling in WVU’s subregion, however. Murray St., at 50 on the S-curve, should have been a 13 seed; Marshall, at 54, should have been a 14.

    Season Ending Collapse?

OU lost six in a row at one point, and finished the season losing 9 of 11, but recent performance wasn’t part of the OU selection criteria. Seems like a double standard to me. Using the supposed OU criteria WVU should have been a one or two seed. Why was OU graded on a different standard than others?

Politics plays more of a roll with the committee than actual performance. Trae Young University is very grateful to get in.
