WVU Varsity Sports Update: Aug 27

Following his productive performance in last Friday’s season opener, senior midfielder Joey Piatczyc of the West Virginia University men’s soccer team has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University Apartments.

Piatczyc had three points in WVU’s 2-0 win at the College of Charleston on Aug. 24, to open the season. He scored the game-winner in the 51st minute and added an assist on West Virginia’s second goal in the 72nd minute.

The assist was a cross from the far-right side that was headed in and gives Piatczyc 26 in his career, the second-most in program history and one shy of tying the program record of 27, set by Dan Stratford from 2004-07. The eventual game-winning goal came on a free kick from approximately 30 yards out that hit the top-left post and bounced in.

Piatcyzc and the Mountaineers host American in the team’s home opener on Friday, Aug. 31, at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in Morgantown. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
