WVU Wrapping Up Zaxby’s Heart of Dallas Bowl Work With More Fundamental Drills
FRISCO, Texas — As the Heart of Dalls Bowl approaches, West Virginia is wrapping up preparation with shared emphasis on fundamentals and repping the game plan.
In the first drill defensive backs and linebackers work horizontally to the line of scrimmage, simulating their drops into coverage, then reacting to a pass thrown through the scrum of bags (linemen in front of them).
This one is familiar to long-time fans – it’s a staple of the way the defensive coaches teach pursuit and proper angles in getting to the ball on wide plays, and then on blocking when turnovers occur.
It’s easy for techniques to become a bit sloppy as the grind of the season progresses. Here, Doug Belk works with corners on chopping their steps, keeping their balance and weight centered above their feet, then reacting to the ball.
Finally, more looks at the defensive line. Numerous moves, from rips to swims, with the all-important first step of getting off the ball and into the opponent quickly, are the keys here.
