WVU’s Men’s, Women’s Teams Both Enjoying Top 25 Rankings
Earning a top 25 ranking in most any college sport is far from easy.
West Virginia’s men’s basketball program has had an incredible run in the polls during Bob Huggins’ time leading the program.
Currently rated No. 17 in the Associated Press poll, WVU has been ranked at least one week in 10 of Huggins’ 13 years with the Mountaineers. His clubs at West Virginia have enjoyed a total 102 weeks in the A.P. poll, including 37 in the top 10. His tenure at WVU accounts for 43 percent of the program’s time in the A.P. poll, as the school has spent 236 weeks in the poll in its history.
West Virginia is also enjoying success on the women’s side, as Mike Carey’s Mountaineer squad is No. 19 in this week’s A.P. poll.
WVU is one of only nine schools to have both its men’s and women’s teams ranked this week.
Gonzaga is No. 1 in the men’s poll and No. 16 in the women’s. Baylor is No. 4 in the men’s poll and No. 6 in the women’s. Florida State is No. 10 in the men’s poll and No. 11 in the women’s. Maryland is No. 12 in the men’s poll and No. 17 in the women’s. Louisville is No. 13 in the men’s poll and No. 7 in the women’s. Kentucky is No. 14 in both the men’s and women’s polls. WVU is No. 17 in the men’s poll and No. 19 in the women’s. Michigan is No. 19 in the men’s poll and No. 24 in the women’s, while Arizona is No. 24 in the men’s poll and No. 18 in the women’s.
West Virginia and Baylor are the only Big 12 schools currently ranked in each.
Both of the Mountaineer squads are also well-ranked in systems used by the NCAA Tournament Selection Committees. The men are 11th in the NCAA Evaluation Tool (NET), while the women are 35th in the RPI.
And you want to know how hard it is to be ranked in men’s basketball, women’s basketball and also football?
Only Baylor (No. 4 in men’s basketball, No. 6 in women’s basketball and No. 7 in football) and Michigan (No. 19 in men’s basketball, No. 24 in women’s basketball and No. 14 in football) are currently in the top 25 in the A.P. poll in all three sports.
