West Virginia senior guard Taz Sherman picked up his first Big 12 men’s basketball player of the week award of the season
Sherman averaged 20 points and four assists in helping West Virginia to a 2-1 record at the Shriners Children’s Charleston Classic. He scored a career-high 27 points in the opener against Elon and added 21 against Marquette and 12 versus Clemson. Sherman connected on 15-of-16 free throw attempts and was named to the all-tournament team.
Texas junior forward Tre Mitchell, who is a transfer from UMass, earned the newcomer of the week award. In UT’s two home wins, Mitchell averaged 15.0 points and 7.5 rebounds while converting 13-of-19 (.684) field goals, including 2-of-4 threes, and 2-of-3 free throws in 21.6 minutes per contest. In last Wednesday’s victory against Northern Colorado, Mitchell tallied a season-best 16 points and seven boards while hitting 7-of-11 field goals (1-of-2 threes) in 21 minutes. A native of Pittsburgh, Mitchell returned to post 14 points (6-of-8 FG, 1-2 threes) and grab a season-high eight rebounds with two steals in 22 minutes versus San Jose State.
